Transfer case chain DIY tight fit help?

I ventured into the DIY transfer case replacement per others on the forum on our 2005 AWD SRX. We have 130k miles, so things were tighter than expected. I had to use a puller to slide the orbital gear assembly off and the sprocket on the short shaft would not dislodge until I removed the chain and then used the puller on the sprocket only. I have cleaned and light wire brushed/ steel wooled the splines on the sprocket and it is still tight. Any thoughts on if I should replace the gear and hope it will slide easily?

Other ideas such as take to a tranny shop to look at it, or replace small spline and gear? Thanks for inputs.

    Mike

Looks to me that all are press fit, shouldn't slide freely. Do you have the 14 page assembly manual?

I do not have the manual. Is it available? I do have pictures and assembly drawings. Talking with Cobra transmissions they mentioned some do have tightness but they believe they are supposed to slip.

There is also an update to the 4479 design from the original 4476 in the '05. Has any work been done on your TC before?
I can send a PDF of assembly if you PM your email.

Re: Transfer case chain DIY tight fit help?

No work was done before. Chain just started slipping and I researched the chain swap with the hv-095 chain. Was surprised the drive sprocket on the front shaft was a bear to remove. I had to break the chain so my puller could grab the sprocket directly. Now cold it will not go on with light hammer pressure. I am going to try and heat it up and see if it opens up enough.

I will PM my email. Thank you for your feed backs and support.

If the parts are press fit then maybe a press is in order.

Press fit parts wont go on with light hammer pressure, you need to hit it but make sure whatever you transfer the force into is not damaged.

If you use heat you will only get one try so make sure you get it right and if it stops halfway down it is going to want to stay there.

Both sprockets should slide easily on shafts when slid on evenly. If not either the sprockets or the shafts are messed up. It might be worth it to consult a mechanic or trans. shop before reassembling again. Check for visible burrs or wear on all parts and this might give you an idea of the problem.H ope this helps.

Was wondering what the outcome was on your transfer case problem. It might help us with dealing with problems in the future. Thanks
