    oil leaked.. change or add?

2007 srx V8. I came out the other morning and below was about a 18 inch wide oil spot.. at first I thought it looked red, but I think that is just concrete of my driveway and it is just oil.

I crawled under and the only thing I saw was some drips off the oil filter and it felt somewhat loose. I tightened it up and parked in a different spot and haven't seen any new dripping. The mobil1 is only about 3k old, and even though I have the next 8 quarts sitting in the garage I dont want to waste.

My dipstick seems to be wet and full when I pull it out, but it is the weird hex design dipstick, so I dont really trust it. I feel like my motor is missing some compression at low speeds, not dramatically, just a little different throttle response than usual.
Should I change oil and filter to be safe or should I just add a quart? If I have an extra quart in can it hurt the motor? My OLM says 75%, so I hate to dump it.

I had just had tire work done at a dealership, so im guessing it was loosened by accident while up in the air, kind of confusing. . All my other fluids seem full.. sure wish I could check transmission.

    Any advice appreciated.

An 18" oil spot is likely about 1 tablespoon of oil. Go by the dipstick.

Just to clarify, to check the oil - Engine off, remove dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert, remove, check level. Is that how you're doing it?

At 3K, there's no reason to change the oil. Follow your OLM. Check the level, add if necessary.

No reason to dump it that I can think of.

I'd be more curious as to why my oil filter was loose.

Me, too! But...............things happen. I'd be glad I found it in time and that I found it at my house.

I change my own oil, so maybe I just didnt put it too tight and it loosened itself over the last 3k miles .. I had tire work done last week, but unless it was just accident, I cant see them messing with it.

Anyways thanks for the responses everyone... anyone ever had their low oil pressure light come on? If I was down a qt or two would it?

Guarantee you that the oil pressure light would not come on with the 3.6 if it's a couple of quarts (or maybe even more) low.

    Don't know about the Northstar.

The oil pressure light won't come on until the oil is low enough to starve the oil pump. The low oil LEVEL message will come on at 2 quarts low (~5.5 quarts remaining), nowhere near close enough to trigger the low pressure message.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Professor wizard - my picture would be almost identical, smaller oil spot, same color and sport srx

I think the oil level sensor was dependent on the year, I think and cant remember so keep checking especially you V6 guys because the car is not going to tell you.
