In Germany I filled up with 100 octane at the pumps, but the average here in Europe is 95 octane

No such thing. Octane isn't a substance, it's a rating. He either means 100 octane fuel, or he's referring to ethanol content (or lack thereof).

I run 87 in my 06 by and have never felt a difference in gas mileage or power with the lower octane level. I believe it is a placebo and you thought you were getting more power. Until you get into tuning you won't feel the difference. Ask conedoctor on what he prefers in his race prepped 4g63 lol he will prob never run 87

    Re: octane boost

European octane ratings are different than US. 100 in EU I believe is like 91 here in he States.

I can attest to 93 VS 87 making a substantial difference unless your DI engine has over 20-30k miles w/out a good catchcan and the intake valves are all coked up with deposits....then not much will make a difference.

We can see when logging the timing pulled due to detonation with 87 (11.5:1 Compression ratio even though DI will always perform better on 93 VS 87) vs 93 , and can see it on the dyno #'s as well.

...not that much...the difference is about 4-5 points...
...100 octane "european" gas (RON-research octane number) is like 95 octane us/canadian gas (AKI/PON-pump octane number, a combination between RON and MON-motor octane number, (R+M)/2 )
87 octane us-rated gas is like 91-92 octane european gas....
90/91 octane us-rated is like 95 octane european.....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

...in Germany we mostly use 95, 98 and some 100 or 102 RON gas...(91/92 is "discontinued" in the meantime and not available anymore)

Well I changed all my plugs, and good thing I did...they were a bear to break loose. Only 33k miles on them assuming no changes before I got it but they looked pretty worn. Put in a gas treament/cleaner and it runs fine now, I think it was bad gas.

    Re: octane boost

If you have v8 you'll fee lthe difference with V6 not a big change, but yeah these additives works, my friend filled his 93+ only car with 87 by mistake and when he used Octane booster from Autozone the knocking sound gone.

Weather or not there is actually a performance difference depends on what engine you're talking about. A blanket statement of V8 = yes and V6 = no is completely incorrect. - My 5 cylinder Vigor will ping if you fill it with 87 and drive hard. My 8 cylinder Seville is perfectly happy at WOT redline, hitting the speed limiter, with 87.

There would be knocking from 87 octane in a V8 SRX. The Northstar has a very effective knock detection system.
