Greetings/Intro from Outside DC
Hi folks - I have been lurking for some time and decided over the weekend to register. I live outside of DC in MD and bought our 2007 SRX4 V6 about three years ago, from CarMax. I guess it was coming off lease as it had 43K on it, from NC so far as I could tell. No idea which trim level it it, but it has the Bose stereo and panoramic roof. 80K now.
First warranty recall was related to resetting the oil change interval setting. Seems people were letting the indicator go down to 10% and less before changing the oil and guess what? They claimed oil consumption issues and some even let the level go down to where it affected one or more of the timing chains. See below.
I have had the timing chains done under warranty -twice. Both indicated by a check engine light. Was always drivable, just under powered. I am told that the three (1) chains on the motor were of poor quality, and to make matters worse (and to make lots and lots of threads and responses on this forum), the first replacement parts were not exactly what was required. I got about a year and a half (15K) before the CEL came on again. In it went for another warranty repair.
I backed into the garage with the lift up once - oops. So that was a repair I've done, and we were smacked in the rear (low mph) at a stop sign and that was another. At least I got a whole new header-back exhaust out of that.
We get about 17 mpg around town and 20 mpg on the highway if we're lucky. But we weigh that against the sheer joy and comfort the vehicle otherwise brings and live with it. Am conscientious about oil changes, but not fanatic either. Usually around 5K but often 7,500 also - but I check the oil at every fill-up and top it up if needed (usually a sign it's time to change anyway). I use a neighborhood independent shop that I trust with my vehicles, and the dealer only for warranty-related items.
One thing I did at 60K was replace every fluid in the vehicle with what the shop uses - in this case Valvoline synthetics. Don't even ask what that cost. But as my moniker indicates, the SRX is "hers" and I want to be assured she can get in it and go anyplace, anytime, for any length of time if she needs to. Her Mom is 94 now so the need to go see her (250 miles away) is increasing. I can think of no other vehicle that I feel she's safer in than this one, four seasons a year.
So greeting all and I'll check back when I can. I use most of my on-line time on a forum for "his" car - a 20-year old Mercedes Benz.
