    CV Axle replacement how to?

2005 SRX AWD 4.6N*. Clunking noise when going over bumps so I jacked it up and had a look. Nothing looked loose or wrong so I started grabbing and shaking everything I could and low and behold when I shake the axle it makes the exact noise. Moves quite a bit aswell. I've replaced the hub assembly before so I know that end of it but anything to know about the other side? Special tools or procedures? Thanks in advance

Re: CV Axle replacement how to?

I replaced mine, just removed the tire, axle nut and wheel bearing. Then removed the nut holding the tie rod end to the steering knuckle to get enough clearance. I was able to pull out the CV axle with a small pry bar. There is a special tool you can rent from Auto Zone, etc.

The new axle should just snap into place.

You could check the sway bar end links as a source of the noise. My new and old CV axle makes a clunking noise when hit with a rubber mallet but the end links were causing the noise.

I replaced my axle because it came apart.

Figured I'd update this. Replacement was a success. Removed tire, axle nut then disconnected tierod end and lower balljoint from the knuckle. This allowed me to push it out of the way and pull the axle. Thanks for the help
