    Side Opening Tailgate?

A few women have mentioned to me how they prefer SUV's with tail gates that open to the side. An example - 2004 -2006 Honda CR-V. Has anyone converted their SRX from a top hinging tail gate to a side opening one? You wouldn't think that it would be too difficult if you found a GM vehicle with a side opening tailgate to just weld the hinges on where they needed to be along with the matching hardware? Why have almost all current SUVs gone with the top hinge? Even the current CR-V?

The top mounted/hinged door never gets ib the way, cannot accidentally be placed under too much load, and serves as a ca canopy of sorts from the sun and rain. Frankly, I don't see the advantage of the side hinged ones. PJ
