Will the modern smartphone make portable nav obsolete?

So I know everyone hates the factory disc based nav and those are changing but I'm talking the TomTom and Garman stuff.

I have a Lumina 920 and the nav is awesome, so why would you need to have a portable nav anymore?

Could very well make them obsolete. I use google nav on my note2 even though I got factory nav. Better platform and continuously up to date on maps and routes. Takes phone calls, plays music, has nav, web and other apps. Dont know much else that could replace it.

I'd say for the majority of time something like google nav would be fine. But it's my understanding you need a cell connection for the map to be updated. There are still areas in the US with no or limited cell coverage, especially in the west.

    Google can suck it lol

With the Nokia I can download maps so I don't need cell service, the nav program is an app and not web based.

I think the oems will get to the point of fast updates but they are not there yet.

Yes. My wife already ditched her Garmin and uses her iPhone exclusively.

I don't know why anyone would buy a portable nav for vehicles unless they really didn't want a smart phone for some reason.

I use my phone usually to find addresses and then type them into my onboard Nav just because it is easier to see and a much bigger screen.

I have a Garmin 1490 in my SRX... Lifetime Maps and Traffic.

When I am in someone else's car with no GPS, I use my Android with Sygic (no "connection" required!).

Even though our Audi and BMW have factory NAV, we end up using our iphone 5 NAV and stream it through bluetooth. The maps are better than factory NAV and it seems to prompt you earlier.
