04 srx v6 code P0700 tcm, hard downshift at low speed

Hey guys, my fathers 04 srx v6 awd with 86k on it just started having an issue at low speed it downshifts really abruptly when you get below say 20mph.

Engine light was on so i ran the code.
Came up with P0700, which leads back to the transmission control module.

Dealer told him to erase the code, which i did, and as I suspected that did nothing.

They want $700 for a tcm then we'd have to pay for install and programming.

    Anyone else had this issue?

If it is in fact that actual tcm can we just buy a used one on ebay and install it? Or does it always need programming?
Ebay price is around $100 and looks like it only takes a couple of minutes to swap out.

Could there be a deeper issue? His buddy that works the parts counter told him there is usually more codes than just the 0700, but my CreaderV only came up with the one.

    Thanks for any insight.

    From the SM-

"This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that an emission related transmission DTC set in the transmission control module (TCM)."

What that means is there is an emission related DTC for the transmission, not that the TCM is bad. Get the codes read from a better reader or parts store, then get back to us. Don't start buying parts just yet.

And make sure the battery is up to snuff.

Isn't the TCM in the tranny?

    Thanks for the input glake.
Don't worry, i always looks before i leap and start buying parts, that's why i posted here.

After a few calls, it would appear that i do indeed need a better scanner for this issue, just like you suggested.

My father called his mechanic who works for cadillac and does side jobs and i think we are going to just let him handle this one. Hopefully it's not the trans or the TCM.

Normally i do all my own work as a ford guy, i have a bendpak in my garage, i've done a few shift kit's and i'm not afraid to pull out a valve body, but it just seems this srx is notably more computer complex than my fords.
And the parts cost a ton more to experiment with.

I also have the real helm inc srx books which have helped a few times with this truck, but sometimes it can be a bit tough to read and/or vague.
This suv is really nickel and diming him to death for a truck that has been well maintained, kinda dissappointed.

I'll post the results when they are in.

Turned out to be a damaged wiring harness. How it got damaged, who knows...
