    Park Brakes Adjustment ?

    Hello,

I have a little problem with my 05īSRX V8 AWD with 35.000 miles...
I can press the "park brake pedal" and they are not braking - nothing.
The brake rotors and pads from the are new and are very nice.
Now, how can I adjust the park brake ? Can I adjust or make shorter the cable ?
    Thanks for the help...

    Frank

The park brake is a shoe inside the rotor new pads mean nothing. Are you sure you installed the rotor properly on the shoe?

Again it's a shoe inside the rotor pull them off and you'll see the adjustment INSIDE AND BEHIND the rotor.

    Re: Park Brakes Adjustment ?

The parking brake pads should have little wear unless the vehicle was driven with the parking brake on. My 03 Envoy has a similar setup. There's a GM tool that is a big caliper that is used in adjusting the pad clearance..... however I used trial and error.... adjusted the pads outward slightly and evaluated the results. The Envoy's spec is .25mm clearance or .5mm total. It appears the SRX procedure is to cycle the parking brake pedal 3 times after adjusting. If not good do it again. As a disclaimer I've never done it.
As 1BadCadSTS says the adjuster should be obvious when you remove the rotor.

If there is absolutely no braking when the emergency brake pedal is pressed, it is likely that the shoes are not engaged on any wheel. I would look to see if depressing the pedal actually pulls the cable that is suppose to lock the wheels. Perhaps the cable has come loose somehow.

Agree.... wonder if he had parking brakes before the dealer did the rotor-pad replacement? It's strange a dealer wouldn't check the parking brake as part of a brake job but I don't know the circumstances of what was done and/or why.

    Re: Park Brakes Adjustment ?

If not used, the cables will corrode, and cease to function properly.

Check the cable itself for easy movement - - if it doesn't move freely, check the cable run from crimps or other damage, and excessive corrosion.

Here is a picture of the parking brake system.

The parking brake is similar in design to the old-school Drum Brakes of the past - - using the inside of the rotor as a brake drum.

check the brake shoe for free movement - - check actuator for movement.

check the brake shoe for wear - - if car was driven with P-Brake ON - it will wear down the shoe to a useless point.

On the actuator, should be a sparred wheel that will lengthen and shorten the actuator piston... You will need a "Break Spoon" to adjust when the brakes are fully assembled. It looks like a miniature crow bar.

Bottom line is - there really isn't a whole lot to the system... if the parking brake doesn't work - - it pretty much will be the cable, actuator, or shoes.

    Good luck!

Thanks for posting this image it saved me last night. I replaced my rotors and the left one wouldn't come off because the lip rusted over and the parking brakes were holding the rotor on. Finally the spring gave way and the rotor came off along with the parking brake... The parking brake assy looked brand new even after 80,000 miles.. thanks to this picture I was able to put it back together.

I have been driving for 46 years and learned early on that the parking brake when used regularly gives you very few problems. The last one to freeze up on me was due to corrosion. Use it or lose it may apply here. PJ
