05 SRX oil change gone bad

My neighbor tried to take the top off of the oil filter housing during an oil change and things didn't go as planned.

Suggestions on what parts need to be replaced now would be appreciated.

    Thanks

One source shows the cap as GM part number 12583470. Retails for around $50. Perhaps Chris @ Rippy can verify the p/n and availability. Rippy Cadillac is listed on one of the banners on the right side. I think Chris is in the parts department and could probably expedite getting you one.

There's been reports on this forum of others having a hard time getting this cap off. However you're the first I've seen to report actually breaking one! But things happen. When replaced retorque to 18 ft-lbs. Should be obvious but check in the cavity to make sure all metal fragments are removed.....

    Use a 6 point socket, 1 1/4" I think. Problem solved.

the v6 3.0L in the catera and the saturns would often have this problem (oil filter cap breaking)

i'm not sure why since nobody in our shop has ever had it happen to them but we've sold a ton to lube shops in town (and ones out of town too)

the part number in this instance is indeed #12583470 $49.95 (list price) - $36 (forum discount price)

i can get them pretty quickly (one or two days) although i would assume you'll want it as quickly as possible and ordering it locally will probably be your best bet at getting it quickly

The blame should be on who ever changed your oil the last time. The correct procedure is to put a coating of oil on the threads of the cap before replacing it so the next time the cap will come off.

I was able to get the cap off after work today. It was a job and a half, but I was able to save him a few dollars.

Wow, that is nuts. Looks like someone used an impact gun set at 150 ft-lb to crank that sucker down. At least it is a relatively easy part to access and replace. It could have been worse and been a stripped drain plug!

Just one more reason why I always change my own....I swear oil changers are all idiots that only feel they can prove their manhood by overtightening EVERYTHING!!

Some ppl go by the tightening and direction the arrow shows on the cap and this is the result.
