| Stock Air Filter Housings Wanted for Modification As previous posts have observed, GM made the fender-side half of the stock air filter box tight and restrictive. If any member has an unused stock filter box they don't want and are willing to "dedicate it to science", please reply. I'll pay for shipping and post airflow and intake noise level measurements for each modification.
GM's design of the stock air box was probably deliberate and a compromise based on expectations of the targeted SRX buyer. I believe air flow could be improved without the expense of a replacement Volant. Replacing the stock filter with a K&N and re-using the stock box doesn't provide much of an improvement. The Volant is sportier, but a little-bit noisy for my tastes in a luxury car.
My plan is to cut the baffles and liner out and re-use the stock filter box.
From prior experience with the engineering on other vehicles, improving air filter flow can improve throttle response and may increase peak horsepower but it will not improve fuel economy. This is because on a modern computer controlled engine, the stoichiometric combustion air-to-fuel ratios are unchanged by this modification. On some cars, intake noise is increased. Thanks. |
