I am in the process of purchasing a 2004 SRX which has the traction control button in it, does that make it AWD?

No. The traction control button disables the throttle interrupt when slippage is detected. It is useful when taking off from loose or slippery surfaces - like pulling out of a gravel driveway onto a 50 MPH road. My RWD SRX also has a traction control button.

Do your homework...before you buy it !

    All comes with traction control...

AWD is sort of 4x4 all the time and not all comes with

Magnetic Ride is other feature and not all comes with

Re: AWD and Traction Control are they the same

just to chime in along with the others. The SRX traction control is an all-speed system that's pretty decent - it detects wheel slippage and adjusts brake and throttle to ensure proper tire traction. SRX's "Stabilitrak" system also compares driver steering input with the angle it is actually turning (the "yaw") and, using brake and throttle, makes adjustments even before forward wheel slippage occurs.

So, it's a very advance system and not to be confused with what passes for traction control on a lot of lesser vehicles. Still, it's no AWD.

There are three ways of determining whether an SRX has AWD and (IMHO) - the most definitive is having a dealer run your VIN through to see what it has. There are also the RPO codes (located in the back - mine are on a sticker underneath the cover for the 3rd row headrests and jack. On my '04, the AWD code is MX7 but I understand that others say MX5. If either of these codes is on your sticker, it's extremely likely that yours is AWD.

You can run your other RPO codes through this RPO look-up to see what else is on your vehicle.

The third way is to get two SRX together - as long as you can detect a significant difference in the size of the front passenger's footwell, then the one with the smaller footwell is likely to be the AWD. I have never heard of an SRX without AWD being built with the smaller footwell but I suppose it's possible.

    Anyway, good luck.

With AWD and Carolina snow shoes (a.k.a. flip flops) you should have no problems this winter. Welcome aboard.

    Interesting read.
Thanks guys for posting this link for the RPO Code. Went right away to the car and searched for it. Since I bought it used I wasn't sure what I got in there.
Found the label (thanks Northern SRX) took a picture and punched all those numbers in.
Heck - for a few minutes I was worried that mine is not a AWD and the used car dealer where I bought it shafted me
    Turned out it is AWD

AWD should have 3 differentials: a differential at the transmission with a drive shaft to a front differential as well as a drive shaft to a rear differential.
RWD has only one differential at the rear and only one drive shaft fron the trans to the differential.
Look under the car! Good Luck!

Do you have magnetic ride control? check for codes FE3 and F55. If so, it might explain why you fell in love with the handling...

Like Jimb said, the safest way remains looking if drive shafts are present on front hub...
