On more than one occasion my dealer has used a "noise sniffer" locater that uses multiple wire lead attachment clips around an area that's suspected of generating a noise. Apparently the sniffer, by the techs relocating the contact clips by directional electronic reckoning, finds the source.
Maybe it would work for you if they'd just try.
Of course there's the self locating method of holding one end of 3 - 4 ft hose to your ear and slowly moving the other end about an inch above a area of general noise to pinpoint the source.
Another is to hold a stick like sawed off broom handle against you ear hole while touching the other end of the stick to any object suspected of making noise. Always worked great in locating/isolating belt pulley bearing failure of water pump or alternator, or power steering.......etc.
