Question strange humming noise coming from rear

Remove this ad
2006 SRX AWD 25,000 miles.
New car to us. It has an intermentant low humming noise that sounds like it is coming from the dirvers rear of the vehicle. Seems to go away under strong acceleration, or when you let off the gas, but is intermintant during mild constant speeds. Not loud enough that you can hear it if you have the radio on any, but certainly lound enough you notice it when the radio is off.

There doesn't seem to be any symptoms on driving performance, just a strange noise.

Any ideas,

Thanks in advance.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

Possibly the hum is a tire noise. Check the tires to see if any feathering or any unusual wear pattern. I found the Goodyear tires on '04 and '05 V6 to be noisy. Then there is always the differential. You might want to check the tire sizes to be sure someone did not rotate the tires and get them switched. SRX comes with different sizes front and rear and no way to rotate.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

I checked the tires and they didn't show any signs of damage or unusual wear. The tires are located correctly.
I would think tire noise would be consistant, not intermentant.

Thanks for the idea.
Any others?

Exhaust?

Maybe rubbing or leaking?

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

Hi!

Mine made a noise similar to yours and turned out to be the hangar bearing.

It did it when it was cold and slowly almost went away the longer you drive.

They had to replace the entire drive shaft and it was 1,250 plus labour but thank goodness it was warranty.

Have them put it on a hoist and run the vehicle when its cold. I had to leave mine at the dealer overnight.

Good luck

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

haven't noticed the tach jumping any, doesn't sound like exhaust.
Good idea on the bearing. I'll have them check it out while warrenty is still in effect.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

I bought a 2005 srx v8 with 6000 miles on it-a demo-about 2 years ago, it has had the same exact humming noise- normally between 35mph and 50mph-have had it back to dealership -they replaced the complete carrier assembly-it still makes the noise-it comes and goes-I have 38,000 miles on the car-otherwise everything else seems ok-the wear and tear on the tires isstill good-almost all highway miles! Any suggestions????????? ac419-474-1733 -Bob Miller

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

Is it a V8 also do you see a slight jumping in tach when you hear the noise at the speeds you are talking about?

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

The factory says this is an exhaust noise that is made worse in the SRX because of the larger rear compartment(station wagon) Thats the factory line and their sticking with that story until they can figure out what it really is.

On more than one occasion my dealer has used a "noise sniffer" locater that uses multiple wire lead attachment clips around an area that's suspected of generating a noise. Apparently the sniffer, by the techs relocating the contact clips by directional electronic reckoning, finds the source.
Maybe it would work for you if they'd just try.
Of course there's the self locating method of holding one end of 3 - 4 ft hose to your ear and slowly moving the other end about an inch above a area of general noise to pinpoint the source.
Another is to hold a stick like sawed off broom handle against you ear hole while touching the other end of the stick to any object suspected of making noise. Always worked great in locating/isolating belt pulley bearing failure of water pump or alternator, or power steering.......etc.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

I have (hopefully had) a similar problem with my 2005 V8 2wd with 37000 km. It was diagnosed on the second trip to the dealership as a faulty torque converter. It was replaced this week and so far so good.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

Are you sure the noise isn't caused the the Electric Fuel Pump? On some cars, you can hear the pump energize when the demand for gas is needed where the pump is located in the rear. I would check that out.

Re: strange humming noise coming from rear

seems like I am having the same problem. Car is at the dealer now. They want their loaner back, but I asked them to check it again. Can't be the tires. Tires are newer and I think it did it when I had my old tires. Mine almost sounds like the car is trying to engage a system (magnetic ride?) at 40-45 miles per hour. I really don't want to take my car back if they did not fix it. I know there is something wrong. This is my 4th cadi. I know them well enough that this is not normal and it is not the tire.

I need advice fast!
