Then the wrapping that holds the catalyst inside the can, and prevents exhaust gases from bypassing the block, has deteriorated.
You hear the ceramic catalyst bouncing around inside. This normally can be duplicated by smacking the side of the can with a closed fist.
The car will probably fail emmissions and set a cel if it is a monitored block. It would be a manufacturing defect and the emmission system has a longer warranty than the draintrain per EPA rules. I think now 8 yrs / 80K miles. It used to be 10/100. Read owners manual for coverage.

Know what the problem is and have them prove it is not. Some Service Advisors are not familiar on Emmission warranty b/c it is not used alot and differs from the norm.
By all means try different dealers if you don't get an answer you like. |

My '05 V6 was making a rattling noise - it was actually the timing system coming apart. After replacing a zillion timing components the rattle was fixed. However, about a month later I got a check engine light that was caused by a faulty left cat - so then that got replaced too. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
