Another Nav diagnostic code

Remove this ad
Hey all,
I have a DTS but the nav system is essentialy identical. I know you all have had the 1791 code for a while. This one allows you to play the DVD while in drive. I have another code, and I didn't think anyone would be too interested in it, but since the 1791 code is so popular I figured I'd share it. This provides access to the general diagnostic features of the nav system. You can see satellite signal info, all the nav systems inputs, do tests of the mic and speakers, check software version, etc etc. There are several calibrations that you can make, and I suggest you avoid these unless you know what you're doing. I hope I'm not opening pandora's box here: 1971 (yes, very similar to the other code.) Have fun.

Scott

PS: the system is by denso and is virtually identical to one used by lexus. This might help in finding more codes for it.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

OK LymanSS----either you are playing with us, or your system is somewhat different.

The 1971 does nothing! NADA---ZIP! Is there another key to push and/or hold after 1971 & pressing enter? Mine goes right back to the normal NAV screen with no changes what-so-ever.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

No, I'm defnitely not playing with you. On my system 1971 takes you straight to a diagnostic screen. the 1791 code works on my system so I presumed that the 1971 would work on the SRX as well. Frustrating to learn that it doesn't. I'm going to see if I can get a look at an SRX factory shop manual and find out if the code is different. I know where to look, so if I can just get my hands on one it should be quick work. Damn. Sorry to disappoint

Scott

I have the GM nav too, and after holdoing the musical note for 3-10 seconds nothing happens... do the GMC's version have a different hot key to enter diag?

Thanks!

Question Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

Hi,

The 1971 does NOTHING on my 2004 DTS.
1791 works as prescribed.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

I can't get my 2004 to go into diagnostics? I ho;d the music symbol for up to 10 sec. and nothing happens... what am I missing? Do I have to be in some screen when I hold it?

Thanks!

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

I have a 2004 GMC Denali, can you point me in the right direction? It, as well, must have a way... I've searched and searched and this is the closest I've found... If I can find a way to get it into diag, who knows....

Thanks!

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

I was trying to ask how to put the 2004 GMC nav into diagnostic mode - the musical note for 3 sec. does not work...

Any one know?
Thanks!

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

Here's the easiest solution:

1. Take your gmc into the dealer, then trade it in for an Escalade. Or, even better, to get info from this forum, get an SRX. (The gmc yukon's are still using radios sourced over 2 years ago.) or,

2. Go to www.gmcforums.com :drinker

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

This is part RANT, part Info.

I have a 2003 Deville (Standard) with Denso Navigation. I found the infamous PIN Code menu 3 days after I bought my car. At that time, I also had access to GM's tech support online and I scoured the Earth looking for information about the thing. There was absolutely NOTHING anywhere about these codes or the PIN Code screen. I found some very mediocre information regarding wiring inputs, but there was nothing in the manual about the Pin Code Menu itself. Anyway...

1791 works fine for overriding the DVD-in-Motion check - Thank god!
1971 doesn't work on my system for accessing anything.

There's a 7.8Meg file in the Nav DVD root called "Loading.KWI" that's been providing me with some interesting reading on the code issues we're having. Although I'm not 100% sure, I think this file is either the actual software that loads into the Nav (boot code?) or it's a "firmware update" of some sort.

If you take the file apart and examine the ASCII and UniCODE contents, it's very clear that there's a lot more to this Nav system than just the "normal" user interface we see. There is quite a bit of diagnostic info that suggests there's a diagnostic screen somehwere... Unfortunately, the code's not x86-based so I can't decompile it and see what it's up to. I took the file apart in the hope that "1791" was stored in plain text (unicode or ASCII) somewhere in the file, but I couldn't find it. There's quite a few ways to encode that, however, and it could be programmed directly into the software as simple hex (06FF).

I'm seriously considering taking my nav system apart to find out:

- What kind of processor it uses (for code disassembly purposes)
- How the software is physically stored: Loaded via DVD each time it boots,
FlashRAM, Hard Drisk, etc...
- If there are any type of external programming interfaces to "explore" (i.e. Serial)

If it is hard drive based, it should be a simple matter to connect the drive to a PC and examine the disk contents. I seriously doubt Denso encrypted the PIN codes in the software. If it's flash memory, we need to figure out how the Flash gets updated and look at the firmware flash file itself. I suspect that's done via DVD rather than via the Class II interface. That's also what I think the file "LOADING.KWI" is, but I can't be sure.

Here's some of the things I'd like to get working on my Nav/Radio system and why I'm taking the time to research this:

- I very much dislike the compass. It's too small to provide any kind of truly accurate directional information. I REALLY wish Denso had given you the option to either have text in it's place (i.e. ENE, ESE, NE, etc...) or better yet, provide the current direction in degrees (i.e. 180° for South).

- ANY Nav system on the planet that uses GPS should provide current LAT and LONG as a minimum! There's also no reason whatsoever not to provide Altitude and even speed over ground (wouldn't THAT just confuse the heck out of the old people that typically buy these things!). The information's there in the GPS data stream so why not display it, or at least make it available to be displayed?

- The ability to sync the clock's time with GPS time (press and hold the current time on the map to quickly get to that screen) is REALLY nice, but there needs to be an option to use it as a time base ALL of the time - that is, automatically set itself to GPS time once every (x) hours or days, etc... Plus, the sync is still manual to some extent - when you sync the time to GPS time, it only updates hours and minutes - not seconds. Once again, the information's there, so why not use it?! It "Denso" the Japanese word for Idiot?

- I HATE HATE HATE the goddamn DO YOU AGREE screen! I'm absolutely sick to death of it. At the very most, it should only ever appear when the driver profile changes or MAYBE once a week. It is unacceptable to make this thing show up every time the car turns on. Arggggg!! If I figure out how to hack this thing, that's the VERY FIRST thing I'm going after. It makes me feel like I'm somehow being extended a priviledge to use the software and Nav system I ALREADY PAID FOR. As the legal owner of this software, I should have the right to disable this message. You know, "Never show this again" or something like that.

- I want to find out if the Cadillac graphic logo can be changed. If it's a resource stored as a file in the firmware, it seems like you could easily change it.

- I want full access to the Nav system while driving so my wife can directly enter a destination POI / Plan routes without me pulling over to the side of the road. Not having this ability makes it a real pain in the butt to use the ever-so-worthless telephone number feature of the Nav system. I'd like to call the place I'm going to see if they're open, but I have to slam on my brakes in the middle of the highway so my stupid Nav system will ALLOW me to view the phone number or select it as my destination... HOWEVER, If you manually move the map to the location you want to go and press "Ent Dest", you can do the same thing while driving. Of course, that's a hell of a lot more distracting than just being able to press a single button that's already been pre-programmed to the destination and press "compute route". It takes me nearly 10-30 key presses to "manually" move the map to a desired location on the map where it would only normally take me 5. Denso obviously had their head up their ass when they designed these speed-based lockouts. Once again, I'm just THRILLED that both GM and Denso feel it necessary to protect me from myself.

- I want to know more about the mysterious VCD/AUX button that appears in the DVD menu. That fact that it's there leads me to believe there's a way to add another A/V input to the system - and I'd LOVE to figure out how to make those jacks available externally. Partly because I want to be able to attach my MP3 player directly to my stereo - NOT via RF. If I want crappy sounding RF-quality music, I'll listen to the radio :disappoin... At this point, the only "easy" way I can come up with to add external audio input capability would be to add a switch to the Left and Right inputs coming from the CD changer in the glove box and mount external RCA jacks somewhere. Then to listen to your external device, you start playing CD's and flip the switch. The Changer's still running, but the audio input is coming from the external device, not the changer. I'm nearly ready to disassemble my car to add this option if I can't get somewhere with this VCD/AUX button.

<RANT> It would sure be nice if GM actually thought about their customer's wants and needs when they designed a car. Don't even get me going on OnStar, THE biggest farking rip-off in GM history. I remain shocked and amazed that they haven't been sued over the fact that you can't use your own cellular service provider with their proprietary hardware.... of course, Verizon would have to offer Analog cellular plans to the public to be able to do so, because OnStar uses outdated, craptastic cellular telephone technology. If GM really had any clue how to make a decent Navigation / Telephone system, they'd have at least made it so the damn Nav system can send the phone numbers stored in its database to the OnStar system... But even that basic bit of common sense functionality exceeded their quota. </rant>

FINALLY, ANYONE who's interested in unlocking the full potential of the Navigation System and the F-ing "PIN CODE" menu needs to read this URL:

http://www.aftermarket.org/Governmen...ies/hr2735.asp

With any luck, the idiots at GM and Denso that designed these lockouts will be REQUIRED BY LAW to give us this information rather than make us try an come up with new and creative ways to find it ourselves. After all - it is YOUR car, YOUR property. I paid for the right to use my Navigation system to its fullest potential.

Anyhow, that's all. I hope you enjoyed my ranting and babbling.

(I still think "Denso" is Japanese for "Idiot"...)
