I talked to the account manager in charge of the cadillac relationship at visteon. He is telling me they do not make the software for the SRX nor the hardware for that matter. they do make some rear entertainment systems but not for the SRX. He suggested talking to Denso (without me telling him that I knew Denso made the hardware). he said it was very likely they were the software providers as well (though he could not confirm this). We talked for a while, so it was clear he was not brushing me off (and I may have found a lead for my company!).
I may try to talk to the account team at Denso that handles the cadillac relationship and see where i can get. but now I gotta get back to work.

ITS Products Business
DENSO develops and manufactures car navigation systems and Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) Systems. DENSO car navigation systems have been tailored not only for Japan, but also for numerous countries around the world, including those in North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. We are continuing to expand coverage in terms of both maps and languages. In the near future, we see our car navigation systems and ETC systems linking to various automotive Electronic Control Units. Also, we envision that more and better wireless telecommunications will be used to access external information quickly and easily. These advances in automotive information technology help to create harmony between people, roads and motor vehicles, and lead to a more comfortable driving environment.
after reading this, it is quite obvious that they are the manufacturers of the software and hardware. http://www.denso.co.jp/en/aboutdenso/business/
that's cool it was good practice anyway..... |

Most if not all navigation systems have a back door diagnostic feature for the technicians to diagnoses, fine tune or change preferences of certain factory settings, and I doubt what you are looking for is in the diagnostic mode for disabling your lock out feature while you are vehicle is moving.
I would look at how they connect the Denos Nav system to the park brake and natural safety switch circuit along with possible the VSS signal, some Nav units will not allow any type of input when there is VSS signal reading which means your vehicle is moving.
You have to determine which feature they use or they can use all three features to stop the customer from operating the Nav system while the vehicle is motion.
If you must, go to a Kentwood dealer and look at the wiring diagram for the Kentwood Nav system, they are the closes to a Denso that you will fine.
The Japanese manufacture is terrify of law suits from the U.S, so they make it so it is impossible to input while driving, but think of all the aftermarket portable navigation systems currently available like the Magellan, Garmin, NavMan, Tom Tom etc, they all are capable of inputting an address while vehicle is moving. |

My Japanese is not up to par, so i am not sure that calling them would be the way to go.
My line of thought is to liaise with the manufacturer and offer advise from the consumer that is actually using the product, good and bad, and to open a line of communication with someone over there that would eventually warm up with us enough to trust us with information of interest (codes!). I think I had a shot with visteon, only if they made the damn thing!
In other areas we can remove the offending part for a replacement (tires, wheels, air intake, etc) but for this unit, it is all we have, and is so embeded in the car, that taking it out could cause problems for the car. This is why it is important for us to talk to the manufacturer or the caddy engineering team to better relay our thoughts and ideas. (my 2 cents).
I will keep digging on this side, good luck on the reverse engineering side

SonarTech there seems to be a problem with your server. Could you post the pictures somewhere else or email them to me at fitman@gmail.com.
Thanks in advance. |

The 1971 code that lets you into the diagnostics of my system came directly from the factory shop manual. That's the huge three volume manual they use in the dealerships. So yes, they are available to the dealers service department (or were for the 2002 model year). However it seems that this code was removed because it won't work on the SRX and someone just said it won't work on an 03 DTS. I know my 02 was one of the absolute first systems that came off the line because when I ordered my car I had to wait for the new nav system to come off constraint because they hadn't started installing them yet.
Denso does make and program the whole thing. I got this confirmed through a number of resources.
beekay, awesome work getting into the inner workings of Denso. I do think that the best way to get into this is to find some techie who worked on it and find the back door. I think most of this stuff was put in there for Denso techs not for GM techs so we won't find it going through GM. The difficulty may be in the language barrier. I do have a friend who's fluent in Japanese so if you get to the point of say...emailing a japanese technician I could get it translated for you.
In the mean time I think we might do well to start manually hunting for the codes and those who are technically inclined can continue trying to analyze the data on the DVD. I've got a Comp Sci buddy with a Prius which has a virtually identical system, and he's working on the whole problem right now too.
Also, I know you've all heard me mention the main diagnostic screen that I can access with the 1971 code, but I haven't heard of anyone else at all getting into it. If anyone is interested I can take some digital pictures of the screen so you can see what sort of data it offers. I don't know if this diagnostic function was removed from later systems or if the code was changed. But in any case let me know if anyone is interested and I'll go hunt down my digital camera.

The 1971 code works on my navigator...
My guess is that the code we need is between 000 - 9999
I don't think it is in the software of the dvd. I think it is hard coded option in the denso unit. The 1971 code is most likely in the firmware of the denso unit itself.
Good job!!!!! We are making progress.

I'm just anxiously reading and awaiting a breadthrough on this. I just wanted all the people here that have the knowledge to make progress on this to know that I appreciate your efforts and I'm enjoying the journey. I hope soon someone will "break the code." Whoever does, I owe you at least a decent bottle of bourbon or your drink of choice. Maybe that's what's missing here--proper motivation!

You might have the right idea. I'd be willing to chip in on a prize for the first person to crack this one. It could be money, goods or services. It worked for the X Prize didn't it? Perhaps if we set a goal and all contribute something we could motivate those who have the abilities. I know they're all pretty motivated anyway, but they'd deserve a little reward for all the hard work. What do you think?

I'll pledge 20 bucks to whoever delivers a code that allows the entry of all navigation commands while in motion. I would also pledge 10 dollars to anyone who can remove the warning consent screen that shows up at the beginning, unless it is solved by the same technique that solves the data entry problem.
