Ok, I just got "touching" up some of the pictures from the innards of my Nav System. Go have a look, if you care. They're hardly "revealing"...

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

That is one thing I forgot to mention -

It went back together just fine - no loss of time or POI's. In fact, there were no adverse effects from taking it apart at all. The two most fragile things in the system are the thin mylar clips and connectors going between certain boards and the 'knife' connectors that attach to the front display bezel. It was also a pain in the butt to reconnect the display flat cable to the display bezel.

Anywhoo, it looks like if you're careful not to short out the Lithium Battery on the Navboard, you won't suffer any memory loss.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

The NavDVD

Time to start looking at the NavDVD. After having a look at the guts of the Denso Nav System, it's become apparent to me that most of our answers will probably be found in the file called "LOADING.KWI" or elsewhere on the DVD since there's no hard drive in the NavSystem itself. Before we get too carried away with file examination, let me post the info about MY DVD. Here's the exact file structure on my DVD.

The disc has a black and gray front, divided into six sections. From the upper left to the lower left:

Section 1: "Cadillac" in script.
Section 2: General Motors Corporation, GM p/m:25737698, (c) 2001 DENSO Corporation, (c) 2000 Navigation technologies., (c) GDT. Geographic Data Technology, Inc., All Rights Reserved, Made in Japan.
Section 3: Map graphic of the contiguous 48 states.

From upper right to lower right:

Section 4: Cadillac logo graphic.
Section 5: DVD Rom, Version 1.10, 464210-6030.
Section 6: Map graphic of Canada.

Inner hub markings: IFPI L155, 464210-5010-1 2

Copy protection on ALLDATA.KWI?
For convenience sake, I tried to do a simple file copy of all of the files on the DVD to a folder on my hard drive. All file copied painlessly, except ALLDATA.KWI, the biggest file on the DVD located in the root. Anytime I tried to copy it, I got a UDFPartition error instantly. The only way I was able to successfully copy the file off the DVD and on to my hard drive was to make an image of the entire DVD to an ISO file, and then extract the ALLDATA.KWI file directly from the image file to the hard drive. That worked just fine, but I have to wonder what was really causing the problem: A genuine defect in the production of the DVD, a legitimate error in the file system, or an intentional error designed to keep us from making a copy of the software? It's anyone's guess, but I know enough about DVD production to know that I'm pretty certain a little "mistake" like this wouldn't make it into full production without SOMEONE knowing about it.

Of course, maybe my DVD's F'd-up. Can anyone confirm this error when trying to copy ALLDATA.KWI to their hard drive? Keep in mind the file itself is 3 Gigs - it will take a while to copy.

Anyway, more to follow when I start examining the files. At this point, I firmly believe that the file LOADING.KWI is the actualy software that gets loaded into the NavSystem, which means that anyone with a newer DVD than mine is probably running newer software. Anyone care to enlighten me?

This provides access to the general diagnostic features of the nav system. You can see satellite signal info, all the nav systems inputs, do tests of the mic and speakers, check software version, etc etc. There are several calibrations that you can make, and I suggest you avoid these unless you know what you're doing. I hope I'm not opening pandora's box here: 1971 (yes, very similar to the other code.) Have fun.

Scott

PS: the system is by denso and is virtually identical to one used by lexus. This might help in finding more codes for it.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

That answer's been posted quite a few times by now in several different groups on this site, and it isn't at all hard to find if you just do a search for it.

I'm driving a 2004 Escalade. But I can't access the codes with the 1791 or the 1971 or anything else I try. Any suggestions?

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

Many members are saying the ways to access the diagnostics are posted, but as yet I have never seen anything about accessing it on a 2004 Escalade Navigation System. Pushing the "note" button any amount of time doesn't bring anything up. And the Escalade Owners Forum doesn't explain the "how to's" either. I've searched every possible search term I can think of.

Can anyone give me a clue? (This would mean I'm Clueless, I know.)

The Escalade has a completely different OEM nav system so SRX owners cannot help you. Sorry.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

Nothing new on my end to report. I've been REAL busy at work, with absolutely no free time to devote to disassembling the LOADING.KWI file. After learning that this system (the Denso-based system) is entirely ROM-based and holds very little potential for modification or enhancement, I've kind of lost interest. I've not given up, however... I still think that there are other PIN codes.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

SonarTech --

It would be unusual (but certainly not impossible) to use the same filename extension (i.e. .KWI) for both data & code files. Therefore I suspect LOADING.KWI is a data file, just like ALLDATA.KWI.

My guess is that the software is actually in:

05/12/2001 04:26 AM 458,752 VIRTUAL0.DAT
05/12/2001 04:26 AM 458,752 VIRTUAL1.DAT

That's about one megabyte total. I'll admit that the 7.8 Mbytes of LOADING.KWI are probably closer to what one would expect the Nav software to be today, but if the system is tightly coded and the peripheral chips are doing a lot of the heavy lifting, it's quite possible that the software that drives the nav system could fit in a megabyte.

Btw, the Hitachi SH-3 (now the Renasys SH-3 -- spun out from Hitachi) is a fairly common embedded processor. It used to be one of the three processors that WinCE supported (SH-3, MIPS, & ARM) until ARM processor became the only choice due to it's superior performance. But I think SH-3 is still strong in the embedded automotive space. It shouldn't be hard to find disassemblers for it. I'd offer to help, but since I found out about the Denso navigation system issues before buying my SRX, I'm more likely to pass on the factory system and buy something like a Pioneer instead. The only issue will be finding space in the dashboard to install it. Did you happen to take pictures of what the dashboard looks like after you opened it to get at the Nav unit? I'm wondering how feasible it might be to install the Pioneer nav system in the space the CD changer (on a non-Nav equipped vehicle) occupies.

Re: Another Nav diagnostic code

I didn't take any pictures of the dash after the unit was removed, but I certainly can if you like. I can take the entire Nav system out in under one minute. The cover panel pops off and there's only two spring-loaded retention clips holding the unit in place. No screws whatsoever. All of the plugs disconnect, and wahlah.

Regarding the VIRTUAL0/1.DAT files. I would probably agree with you if I had to guess based on file names, but there's just one small problem with those two files holding the OS - they're full of nothing. Nadda. Each file is filled with 458,752 bytes worth of ZEROS. I can't figure out WTF they're for. The cool thing is that they both ZIP down to 1,144 bytes...

I've got all of the DVD here on my system to fool around with. I'll have a look at ALLDATA.KWI and post the results. At 3.01 gigs, it'll take me a while to extract all of the ASCII & UNICODE strings out of it, but at least we'll be able to figure out what it does!
