I'm using 1 quart Mobil 1 every 1,200 on my V6. Going through the consumption test right now. Just a pain in the neck to keep going back to the dealer.

My first car was a 1989 German beauty called Trabant Combi. It had a 26 (yes, twenty-six) HP engine & ran on 1 part oil : 50 part gasoline blend, mixed externally at the gas station.
Now my 2005 SRX has a 260 HP engine & runs on 1 part oil : 500 part gasoline, mixed internally.
    Ten times the improvement!

I have an 04 SRX with the 4.6 Northstar and I use AMSOIL and the AMSOIL filter. I go 8k miles and it's never down a drop. I was always told the Northstars are known to burn some though.

    LMAO
    good analysis!

I have a lot of experience with the old Saturn 1.9 engines.
What's amazing is that they can burn a quart every 500 miles, and run just fine, and show no evidence in the tailpipe of it at all.
(There's no oil drainback holes behind the oil rings on those, a major design flaw.)
However if you keep pouring in the oil, they'll go 300,000+ miles.

The problem is the average person doesn't keep up the oil fill, low oil pressure causes the timing chain tensioner to slack, the cam/crank relationship goes off, and the car is junk.

all cadillac engines run hotter than normal engines... its normal for them to burn more oil... its the cost of the best car in the world...

Best Car in the World. You're totally joking - right? May be just the opposite especially based on cost.

    Re: Oil Consumption

sounds like a lot of people doing the consumption test. Anybody had any success of having their engine repaired by GM based on the test findings?

    Re: Oil Consumption

My 09 SRX with 28k miles uses a quart every 1,500 to 2,000 miles... I just listen for lifter click when I first start the car. When your oil level gets low, your lifters will click for the first second or two on start up. At that point, you should be right at 1 quart low or a tad more.

I've gotten the same line about oil consumption. "Normal".

US Car makers are getting very good at dodging the bullet to avoid costly warranty work..

These are the excuses I get on a regular basis since I started driving American Cars.
(05 Ford Mustand, and now my 09 SRX.)

    "Tech can't reproduce the problem"
    "Computer Diagnostics can't find anything."
"Computer says everything is within normal parameters"
    "Meets Factory Standards"
    "Acceptable performance according to standards"
    "They all do that!"

I never heard any of those statements when I drove my BMW, Audi, Infinity or Volvo.

Not to say I didn't have any problems with those cars - I did - and they simply fixed the problem no questions ask and no excuses.

My last American Car was my 94 Corvette - - I got so tired of taking it to the shop, after 2 years I traded it at a serious loss, just to be rid of it - that was also the cause for my first experience with a foreign car, as I traded it on an Infinity! I should have learned my lesson, BUT, I figured after 11 years I would give American another chance - BUT, I am a very slow learner, and figured Ford was the problem, and I felt sorry for GM so I bought this SRX. So far I am unimpressed with GM, and more then likely will not buy another. My next car will surely be another foreign.

    Re: Oil Consumption

My 2004 V6 was repaired by GM at 94,000 miles under extended warranty
I had been using 1qt per 1500 miles

In the last 22000 miles no oil consumption, even with mobil 1 0w30!

The Dealer (GoldCoast) also replaced my noisy timing chain / sprockets at the same time

    I am 100% satisfied

    Re: Oil Consumption

how are you ray, i was wondering how your oil consumption was after we did the rings....and the word 'normal' oil consumption is not how the bulletin is worded..its not normal its "1qt in 2000 miles is acceptable", more or less depending on driving habits and road conditions"

    Re: Oil Consumption

    I need your opinion.
my dad is going to give me the standard family discount of 20% on his '08 SRX V6 with 41,000 miles on it. And that is 20% off the Carmax offer - so a really good deal.
the only "problem" with this car is that it is eating through oil (4 quarts at his last oil change - and I do not know the frequency with which he gets the oil changed).
A few questions for the group:
    1) *IF* you could talk the dealer into fixing this "problem" would it be covered by the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, or would it come under the standard 50,000 mile warranty?
    2) *IF* the dealer would sell you an extended warranty, would you be inclinded to buy one with this problem?
    3) If I buy the car, what are the main problems that will result from this oil issue (cat convert dying out early?)
    4) If I bought the car, and wanted to get this problem fixed (and the dealer wouldn't cover it) - would the fix be replace the rings? I could call the dealer for a quote, but does anyone have an approximate cost?
    5) All things being equal, would you be inclined to buy a car with this oil issue give the good sale price.

Your help is very much appreciated.
