Trunk pull down motor

Remove this ad
Well, seems like my car is acting more and more like my girlfriend in the cold weather. My trunk pull down motor stopped working the other day, and now I'm driving around with my trunk open an inch, and I hate it. Until I get a new motor, is there anyway I can manually wind the motor down so my trunk will at least latch and close all the way? I hate the way it looks, and I have a lot of money invested in the trunk for it to be pryed open fairly easily. Also, I was looking on rock auto and it lists two things under this category, one being 60 bucks and one being 200, any idea which one is the motor unit I need to replace?

Re: Trunk pull down motor

Before you replace any electrical part I need to ask, Have you checked for blown fuses, or loose connections at the pull down motor?

The $60 part is the motor, this is probably what you need to replace. The motor is the unit that you see in the trunk. The $200 part is actuator which is found on the truck lid itself.

The way to tell which item has failed (if you have verified that all fuses and connections are fine) is simply to push the trunk release button (preferably in the glovebox), if you hear the "clunk" and you can open the trunk then the actuator is operating properly.

Sometimes if you hold the lever down on the actuator, and repeatedly push down on the lever on the motor; the pull down action will engage. Quickly release both and close the trunk. this will allow you trunk to remain completely closed until you get you new unit.

Hope I have helped in some way, good luck!

Re: Trunk pull down motor

I've had two of these stop working on me. You can take apart the motor, turn the latch down so that you can close the lid all the way. It takes a couple of tries to get it down the right amount but I've done it. I'd start with about three full turns and go from there.

Re: Trunk pull down motor

I made mine mechanical aswell, I did the same as iceman but saw that if I drove around for a while the trunk motor latch worked its way back up leaving the trunk slighty open. I took a hot knife and cut the plastic on the bottom of the molding so that the latch would stick out, then I found a nut large enough to screw onto the teeth. It worked for me and I dont have to slam the truck or anything to get it to latch on.

Re: Trunk pull down motor

It could also just be the actuator switch. Check that out first.

Re: Trunk pull down motor

Had a problem with my trunk lid pull down on my 96 eldo. A little testing and found the motor was fine but the gears driven by the motor were stripped. Several motors on ebay but usually without the gears. Managed to find one (with correct number of wires) at a salvage yard for about $35.00.

Re: Trunk pull down motor

Seriously...

Everytime mine acts up, I get out a can of WD40 and spray the hell out of it. Once it took a week of spraying, but it started working again. Acted up again 3 months later, got the WD40 out, and works again.

Worth a try?
