Had the Steering Position Sensor changed on my 01 for the service stability message. Message never came back.

Had the Intermediate Steering Shaft changed because of a shuddering in the steering wheel at low speed turns. Apparently the part is a different design. Shuddering went away

Re: Service Stability System

How do I get the codes? My Service Stability system light stays on every time I drive the car.

Re: Service Stability System

If you have a DIC control panel like the Seville/Deville series (3 toggle/buttons just right of the DIC ?) the stickys at the top of this thread page, Northstar Performance, and Technical Tips entitled "How to pull codes" and "Got codes ? Look here" will tell you how. It's all built into the car. No scanner needed - generic scanners miss a lot of codes anyway.

Re: Service Stability System

Murphyg - could you post the new intermediate shaft part number?

I've got an 01 with a shudder/stickyness when I turn at low speed (feels like something sticks then releases on turn).

I'm planning to do SWPS and Intermediate Shaft this summer...just planning the job.

Re: Service Stability System

Part number for the intermediate shaft ('01 - '04) is: 26079786

A number of GM models used this part. Not sure when, but it was re-designed. Distance between the steering rack and the column is not fixed and the intermediate shaft has to change length. The original design tended to get stuck (thus the "popping" you notice in low-speed, sharp turns) instead of moving smoothly.

Other people are describing the process as complex procedure others stuck on disabling SIRS but you know of an easy fix. Can you please tell me how you performed this tsk? Inquiring minds would definitly like to know more.

Re: Service Stability System

I have a 99 SLS, and I just started getting two codes. C1286 and C1287. I know the C1287 is a result of a bad SWPS just like everyone else on this thread, but how exactly is the C1286 connected to this. Could it be that it is just a bad connection? And if so, would that result in getting the C1287 code and not needing to replace the Steering sensor?
