Install the sensor retainer (2).

After you get all of the kick panels out of the way this isn't all that hard of a job. The column is held in with 4 13mm bolts and a pinch bolt at the bottom... Down by the sensor. The pinch bolt is the bear... In cold weather you will need to heat the vinyl boot with a hair dryer or you'll never get it out of the way. |

I still have a hole in my garage wall from hurling a BFS out of frustration while trying to get the pinch bolt back in. Actually it was that experience that caused me to fork over the cash to the dealer when the SWPS went bad rather than go through that again.

Jim | Jim, you do mighty fine work and have some interesting cars, I really like the Jimmy. I had a 1984 and just loved it, bought a 2000 Blazer bigest piece of crap I have owned to date. Would love to find a jimmy like you had, are they out there and if so are they big bucks/

Mike | They are very rare but I wouldn't say big bucks. You could only get them in 1992 and 1993. You can find out all about them at www.syty.org. That's the Syclone/Typhoon website. Mine was a Typhoon, which is the Jimmy-based version. I swear the AWD coupled with the 4.3L turbo would produce enough g-force to make you dizzy when you launch from a stoplight. Sometimes I wish I had kept it, other times I'm reminded of how tempermental it was. Definitely a fun toy, but not as a daily driver.

Looks like I do need a new module, will probably wait to summer, but in the mean time will have steering wheel shaft check for service bulletin and if it is bad have both done at same time.
Thanks again for eveyone's input.

Would a bad SWPS cause problems to brakes, aside from a strange feeling while braking, ie ruin pads or warp rotors??
Also I have been looking to find instructions to remove the steering column to get at the SWPS and the bearing. I know there are 4 bolts, and one pinch bolt which attaches to the intermediate steering shaft. But I have a few questions...
Should I disable the SIR befor i attempt this?
Once my helper pulls the column out, making sure the wheel stays straight, what do we do with it from there, just lay it down on a flat surface and go to work?
I also read in one thread that there is a SWPS retainer, p/n 07847029. The only replacement parts I have are the bearing, SWPS and intermediate steering shaft. Do I need to get this retainer or can I use the old one? Has it been redesigned? I only found out about the retainer this evening.
Thanks! |

Beyond that I do not know.

If you do it yourself, to answer your question, I would disable the SIR by pulling the fuse...and then the Neg battery cable just to be double safe. but that is just me... | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
