Good question...

Would it be possible to get a cluster from a car with the same VATS code? I don't know, but just asking.

Re: 1999 Caadillac Eldorado Replacement

So why is the gauge cluster tied into VATS anyway?

The instrument cluster is tied in to securely lock out people that want to change the mileage by simply changing the instrument cluster. I'm not sure but I think it is a government issue. It is tied into the security system and it will take someone who is pretty good with computers to even try to find the part that protects the cluster and change with another. Most likely, it will be integral with the cluster and cannot be removed.

Can you find another and just change out the speedo???? On my car the mileage is a separate compnonet.

Anyone know if these are sealed units??? The speedo is simply an electronic guage that indicates what the brain tells it to. If you can get inside (big if) the speedo guage should be nothing. what do you think??

Re: 1999 Caadillac Eldorado Replacement

I thought the mileage was actually stored in the PCM, and that you could change clusters all you wanted and it would still display the same mileage. Oh well.

Re: 1999 Caadillac Eldorado Replacement

You could be right.
But that would be the only logical (that I can find) reason for such tight security for the cluster.

Basically, there isn't anything else there to be secure about.

If the mileage is secured elsewhere, what's the point to secure a guage cluster like that???

Like many other areas of the car, seems a bit overengineered to me.

Re: 1999 Caadillac Eldorado Replacement

^^ I see your point that if the mileage is stored somewhere, why can't you change the cluster. "Overengineered" is the perfect word to use.

Re: 1999 Caadillac Eldorado Replacement

Why don't you remove your cluster and send it to a gauge specialist like redline and have them rebuild it. Then you keep yours and it will function with the VATS. I have have them redo clusters on my old cars.
