1999 ElDorado. Hooked it up and its locked (theft-lock). Can't pull a code
from it using the presets. So the Vin must be programed in. Is this something
my dealer has to clear for me? Or is there a way around this. TIA |

I think you have to be a Dealer in order to use this automated line. |

1. Turn the ignition ON (The radio displays LOC)
2. Press and hold presets buttons 2 & 3 or 1 & 4 for approximately 10 seconds.
3. The radio display changes from LOC to a three-digit number. Write this number down.
4. Don’t take long, fifteen seconds max before the next step.
5. Press the AM/FM button
6. The radio display changes to another three-digit number. Write this number to the right of the first one.
7. You now have a six or four-digit number, the first three digits are from STEP 3 and the last three digits are from STEP 5
8 If you have a four digit number, it will show all four digits at the same time. Example 4523
Note1: You may have two sets of the same number. Example- (233-233).
Note1: Saturn and GEO Vehicles only require a four Digit Serial #
The fourth digit will be half the size of the first three digits on Saturn and GEO Vehicles .
Now if I recall, there was a GM Hotline that the Dealers would call with the code obtained in the above outlined steps that would give the Tech the unlock code. |

will come on when I fool with it but thats all. Both my original and also this one have a "band" button
instead of "am/fm". Bought this on e-bay from a volume seller. They said they would send the original
VIN but they didn't. My problem is if I take it to a dealer to unlock it and the thing is defective I'm out more bucks. BTW,what's a tech 2, man or machine?one other thing, original radio, on/off knob (in=off & out=on). This radio the
knob stays out all the time (?) Thanks for any advice you can give me. |

When the key is turned on it checks with other modules to see if the stored VIN matches. If it does the radio works, if it doesn't it locks.
The VIN has to be reset in the radio, it is done with a Tech 2.
Usually the only place to find the Tech 2 with the software to do this is at the dealership. Might cost you $40-$50 depending on your relationship with your dealer.
I hope the other options match up. Sometimes you run into other problems doing swaps like that. |

Some schematic scouring for the options of the car you took it out of and the car you put it into might be in order.
My guess would be vehicle options have caused the pinouts to be different. |

Class 2 Serial Data Communication allows control modules (i.e. the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Body Control Module (BCM), the Dash Integration Module (DIM), the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), the radio, the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Controller, and the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) to exchange information. This information may be operational information or identification information. Among the identification information exchanged and compared within these modules is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Typically the one module, the master module, broadcasts the VIN and all the other modules compare the VIN stored within itself. When the broadcast VIN does not match the VIN stored within the SDM, the following actions occur:
• DTC B1001 Option Configuration Error is set and deployment of the airbags is inhibited.
• DTC B1271 or a DTC B1780 Theft Locked.
The VIN information is also used by the radio. When the VIN does not match the VIN stored within the radio, DTC B1271 or DTC B1780 is set and the radio is inoperative.
Additionally, the master module will compare the SDM's part number (last four digits) to determine if the correct SDM is installed in the vehicle. If the SDM is the wrong part, a B1001 will also set.
This situation may occur when a vehicle is being repaired. When a PCM or a body control type module is replaced, the VIN information must be programmed into the replaced (new) control module. A module which has had VIN information entered into it (for example, one taken from another vehicle) cannot be reprogrammed. VIN information can only be entered into new modules. The ignition must be ON in order to program the control module. Since the VIN information is broadcast when the ignition goes to ON from any other ignition switch position, DTCs may be set in the SDM and/or the radio. Therefore, always follow the specified control module replacement procedures.

While that is true for most modules, the VIN can be reset in the radio multiple times without issue.
Some modules burn it in, like body modules, and cannot be changed. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
