Question Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

Remove this ad
'92 Seville

Okay, I ended up having an aftermarket keyless entry put in because I was told that my old module was bad. They bypassed the old module and the theft system because it was causing me problems. and I was so excited when they finally finished because I no longer have the door keys or the plugs for them and i haven't been able to lock the doors for over 10 months.

In the end I tested it at the shop and the drivers side door wouldn't lock.
I ask the guy who installed it and he said that the motor is not working on that door but it will lock and unlock the other doors. (I was pissed because they neglaected to tell me this until after I paid the bill)

Anyways I was wondering if it really could be the motor and how much one costs or if I might be able to see if there is a short or something like that?

And How hard is it to pull off the drivers side door panel?

I used to do it on my old 65 tbird but that was a piece of cake and I don't want to pull it off myself not knowing if i'm going to get it back on properly.

Thanks in advance

Have a Test light? Check the connector going to the acutuator. Also see if you can manually move it back and forth to check if it is binding. If everything checks out, it might be toast. They get weaker with age, until they cant even move the lock.

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

okay the actuator houses the motor right?

i found the actuator part online for $34.95.

http://www.a1electric.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

but when i called the parts store the guy told me i would have to go to the dealership or get one from a car stereo place. ????? i was just at a car stereo place. if they could have fixed it i imagine they would have sold it ot me. that's the way they do business.

then i called another place they found a switch, don't need that. then a "power door lock motor" that was $54.95 and had to be ordered, not in stock. i hate part stores who don't have knowledgeable folk working in them.
this girl asked me what make the car was when i said seville. oh sorry, i'll say it slowly for you, "ca-dil-lac"

anyways, does anyone have any idea where i might be able to find this part and if it's a common gm part, can i use one from another gm make of car?

thanks

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

This is the type of quesetion that you'd probably get a better answer for in the Eldorado & Seville section.

Call a dealer and check with them about what will work. It might actually be better to get it from them if the price is close to what a parts store wants for it. I didn't even know you could get parts like that from a parts store. Do you know for sure that it's dead and it's not some other problem? Unless you try what Dave said if you don't know for sure that's what's wrong you might be buying it for no reason.

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

Yeah, I'd access it and test it first. Put a DVM on the leads and find the positive and ground wires. Work the switch with the DVM hooked up and see the motor is getting voltage and ground. It it is and still not working it's bad. Make sure you use the drivers door switch to test as the car has drivers door priority unlocking (one push drivers door, another push all).

Hopefully the installer got the right wire. If he did it would do just what your are saying, but that a long shot I would think.

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

I just caught this, the driver door unlocks but won't lock. Well forget what I said above, he has the right wire. Yeah, check the motor and the wiring. I would suspect the wiring as I have never seen a motor work one way and not the other.

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

gonna have it checked out next week.
don't know if the motor works one way or the other because it has never been locked.
i bought the car without a remote and without a door key. i'm pretty sure it was a repo car, at least it showed it as repo on the vehicle history.
anyways, i don't know what bearing that has on the whole situation.

either way, i'll get back to you and let you know what happened with it.

thanks for the replies

Re: Keyless Entry replaced - Drivers door won't lock

Hey, you never got back to us. LOL. I doubt your still around but I would love to know what the results were. I'm having the same exact problem right now. It will unlock but not lock. My friend said the same thing, if it works in one direction, it should work in the other.
