Thanks for the info. mtflight specified that you can do this at the beginning of this thread and he sent another member instructions on how to do it. I was hoping to get those instructions... If someone has the Factory Service Manual could you look up. override section of the instrument panel cluster and post how to do it. Would be a big help! thanks!

You can do it in the 98 Eldo, but the STS is different altogether. The info is from the service manual (FSM). I can try to look it up at home to see if there's any info for your 98 STS but don't count on there being one. We'll see what I find.

I'm no wizard, just pulling info off the Factory Service Manual...

Where did you find the kit? I was looking for one too. I have all the parts, just missing the headset. I am put the phone in instead if we can't find something else to do with the steering wheel buttons.
I have the headset if you want it from a 98 just pay me shipping

Switching out the phone for the HVAC controlls. I removed the phone. No use for it.

Hey Bill,

I looked over and over the electronic service manual and I did not find the "On-Board Diagnostic System," OBDS, section. Funny thing is it said in the manual to refer to that section (lacking the link).

If you know anyone that has the paper version ask them to look for it--it may have been excluded from the electronic manual.

If found, the section may or may not have the Overrides section. For the Eldorado and Seville prior to 98 it is in the Instrument Panel Cluster section--not the case for the 98+ Seville and 2000+ Deville.

One possible way around this is by using the infamous TecII, but I do not know how to use it or where to find one, other than your friendly GM dealer.

Good luck.

Re: Steering Wheel Buttons 98 STS

Hey Bill:

Did you ever get this issue sorted out on your 98? Is there an override in the IPC for the phone? When you changed your switches did you notice any different harnesses back there?

I would expect that the phone would have it's own harness and the ones for the HVAC are tied up or buried in the column somewhere...
