My little accident =(

Remove this ad
Well I had a little bobo while driving around tonight. Just washed the car today and felt like a million bucks riding around. Coming up on the end of my cruise. See come construction off to the side with those flashing horse things. I have a pickup truck in front of me doing about 45mph. Just ashed my cigarette (I know I know.. Im ashamed.. I picked up the habbit of smoking in my car after 2 years of not). Thing comes out of nowhere and my right side mirror wacks it. broken mirror hitting my face because the windows cracked open. So I finally get home to assess the damage. Well when I popped the mirror back open the glass fell out. There was a huge indent/crack in the housing. And damnit, the passenger window is all nicked and scratched up! Just yet another problem on top of it all.. So as of right now Ill need the mirror, housing and the painted part thats on the door because thats also nicked up. Not sure what to do with the window.
Well thanks for listen to me ramble.

Re: My little accident =(

Ouch! Be more careful! I've seen those mirrors all the time for sale on eBay, so it won't be hard getting a replacement.

Re: My little accident =(

Yeah, too bad about the accident... I just got a passenger side mirror for my 97 Seville on Ebay for $60, delivered. If you have the heated mirror option, make sure the replacement mirror has it too. My replacement didn't have this, and now I have a constant code when I run the DIC. Not that I need a heated mirror here in New Mexico, but still..... You can tell if the replacement has the heated feature if it has two wire plugs instead of just one.
Good luck!!

Re: My little accident =(

Yea I normally wouldnt have had a problem avoiding it. I pretty good at avoiding potholes and such. But I recently had surgery on my driving arm.. And well my reaction time isnt the same. But I will have to keep an eye out on ebay. Rafter.. I think the heated mirror was a standard option for 98+ Sevilles.. But I know the wires your talking about and will make sure. It'd be nice too if I could find one in pearl white!

That sucks too! I think this is cheap enough to not worry with insurance. Plus I wouldnt want my rates going up either.

Re: My little accident =(

I bought 2 mirrors for my ETC, seperately, for about $35 a piece shipped via eBay. If you have a common color you might get lucky and not have to have it painted.

Re: My little accident =(

Well I finally got a replacement mirror. $100 + ship off ebay. It was off a 99' or so the guy said (he also said 00'). But it's dark grey in color so I'm having it painted. Question is, how do I get the glass out? Affraid of cracking it. My broken one is out and I see there are 4 clips for adjustment.. Should I just pry it out? Wish I could just keep it in, but the paint pretty much covers the whole inside and it would be an eye sore for me. Also going to have the drivers side re-painted also due to rock chips.
Thanks
MacK

Re: My little accident =(

Mac,
I still have the glass from my daughters '99 on my work bench. I salvaged it after her little mishap (got sideswiped while parked in Chicago. Found it hanging in the morning). It appears to me that the 4 "clips" are a ball & socket type of arrangement and should snap out. Be careful not to flex the glass too much.

Re: My little accident =(

Same thing happened to me, when I was going up a narrow street with cars park along the side. A big tow truck came barreling down in the other direction (this street should be a one way it's that narrow) so I did the only thing I could. Pull as far over to the right in hopes that he wouldn't smash my front end it. Well, I got over enough to miss the truck, but I was a little too far over. In my haste, I managed to get close enough to this Camry, to the point where my passenger mirror was directly in the path of it's driver's side mirror. I couldn't see it as I was concentrating on the huge ass truck next to me. Next thing I know, there's a loud POP from the right side of my car, and small pieces of mirror flying everywhere. There were even pieces on my trunk lid. For some reason, it seems like when the glass in these mirrors get smashed (in particular by something hitting the front of the housing) they seem to explode into big chunks, and tiny fragments (which put minute chips in the window). I've still got some small chips in my window, but they aren't really that noticeable unless you look closely.

I would look on ebay first, and then consult a body shop if you don't have any luck. At least you don't have to buy someone else a mirror too...

Re: My little accident =(

That sucks danbuc.. And yes when these mirrors break, they break all over. I had pieces all over my dash, floor and seats.I did buy one off ebay though. Just trying to figure out how to get the glass out for re-painting.
Ranger - any ideas? If things dont go as planned do you think youd part with the glass? It needs to come out by Monday.. Brothers buddy works at a body shop and is willing to do both mirrors for $50. Those 4 ball clips look to be tough to budge.

Re: My little accident =(

Mac,
I would bet your brothers buddy will know exactly how to remove it. As far as parting with the one I have, sure, I probably will never need it, I save everything. It is heated & auto dimming.

Re: My little accident =(

Well I'm not sure about him knowing. Same with the drivers side.. He might want it off and I dont know if i'd trust him to take the door panel off ya know?
Since is dimming its the drivers side.. Wonder if it would still work on passenger side? Guess im jumping ahead of myself here..

Re: My little accident =(

Yes, it is the drivers side. Not sure how compatable it is to the passenger side.
