Slight overheating

Remove this ad
Well since is has been getting a bit warmer here in the Chicagoland area. I have noticed my temp guage creeping past the 1/2 way mark. 1st time I noticed it, I was idling in a parking lot for about 1/2 hour. It's only gotten 1/2 way between the 1/2 way mark and the next notch to the right. The other times Ive seen it were in traffic. I wouldnt be moving and it would move to the right. Once I start moving it goes back to its rightful spot at 1/2 way. I havent checked my levels yet. But could this possibly be the start of my gaskets going?

Thanks
MacK

P.S. I will find some time to check levels and post back.

Re: Slight overheating

Is this a new behavior for it? I wouldn'y worry yet. That may be normal for that year.

Re: Slight overheating

Just started noticing it recently.. I did see it go past 1/2 once. But this was on a VERY hot day with the ac on and sitting in traffic. Did check the coolant level and it was fine.

Re: Slight overheating

I'd just keep an eye on it and the coolant level. At some point I know they dummied up the guages because people were panicing when they see it move. Not sure when they did that. Mine just sits dead center when in reality, I am sure the temp is fluctiating some. Personally, I'd prefer to see a real time guage than a dummied up feel good guage.

Re: Slight overheating

The fans don't kick on til about 225F. You should see a temp rise when sitting still.

Re: Slight overheating

Well that great if it's supposed to. I'm just worried because I have never seen it move before (besides that 1 time).. It's been like mid 70's lately and its doing it. And of course last summer there were days in the high 90's and I didnt see it move.

Re: Slight overheating

Well, my car is always moving past the middle part on the gauge. I also have the digital temp. readout and it is between 206 and goes all the way up to 224 on heavy traffic. when it gets that hot I look at the gauge and it is just past the middle part. I use to worry but when I asked around this forum, I found out it is normal.

Since it has never moved before and has always been at 12:00, it sounds like something is different, but I still would not panic, as you are not "overheating" . Thermostat is a posibility. Just keep a close eye on it this weekend.

Re: Slight overheating

There is a procedure that allows you to see the temp in the display but I'm not sure if the vehicle's year have anything to do with it.

Re: Slight overheating

Yeah, I'm not sure what years that is for. I whish I could do it on mine. I want to say it is only doable on OBDI cars, but I'm not positive about that.

so it's true we cannot read out any digital temps on our 98+ Seville's??!?!?

My 89 let me do it for just about any sensor i could get digi readouts when in the diagnostic mode with OBDI ... damn

My dad's 98 Deville DOES display the coolant temp in the DIC. It's just not fair.

Re: Slight overheating

However we have an outside temperature gauge ,I see no point why 98+ STS has not euqipped with digital temp
Anyway , mine also sits dead in the middle of the gauge with the ac on ,but with the engine idling without ac on , it just slightly moves but I don't think it's a telltale mark of anything that will be going wrong .
You know Northstar comes up temps in a jiffy so to say
