Too late since you already bought it but for the record, my '97 Deville developed a half case leak. Repaired under warranty and was bone dry when I sold it at 107K. Current '02 is also bone dry. Check out the Technical archives, top left of this page. Lots of good info every Northstar owner should read. Congratulations on the new car!

Re: Disturbing revelation...

Nothing to worry about, he's just saying that his car developed a "seep"
like we were talking about. But that doesn't mean yours will!

Re: Disturbing revelation...

I'll comment:

Sometimes Northstars develop a half case leak.

It's relatively rare though, and you can crawl underneith it and look around. If you don't see a leak and don't see drops on your driveway, you'll probably be fine.

With all engines, there are always going to be some bad, and some good. North*'s are known for leaks, on SOME, and for burning oil others, or both I guess. From everything I've read, the N* was designed to burn some oil through its cycles. As far as leaks are concerned, those who do have leaks on there N*'s are very minor, sorta like a a few drips a day leak; which doesn't worry most who have it. My 97 ETC burns oil, I suppose more than necessary, because Im ON the Engine 70% of the time, and take it easy 30%. Either way, new, fresh oil is introduced to the crankcase keeps the engine cleaner over an indefinite period of time. I was told by a technician at Cadillac that most of the N*'s with the problems are those who are owned by older individuals, or shall I say, older ladies. He stressed the importance of WOT, atleast once a day, saying in his words (I think the N*'s like to be pounded on) NO JOKE! Since I already drive my N* aggressively, It was not new news to me, nor will it alter my driving habits. Either way, and reiterating my first post, the N* is one of the best engines ever designed in the world. It has won numerous awards and been praised time and time again as a miraculous powerplant. Obviously, my experiences will differ from others, but at the same time, many many people, will feel exactly how I do when it comes to the power, grace, and the sheer brute force of the N* Engine. Id' say, IMHO, that the N* ETC 300HP 300 FT LBS TORQ, is faster than 80% of the cars on the road. Good luck with urs!

Re: Disturbing revelation...

It's a big complicated engine... any drippy leak is serious. A seepage, that hardly makes it to the ground is usually normal on a car that is not brand new.

If there are drops of oil making it on the ground, look at the oil cooler lines.

Don't take that post wrong. I didn't mean to say that you should not buy it. I was simply agreeing that they sometimes do seep a bit. Not a big deal if it does. I was trying to emphasize more on the bone dry. Guess I didn't do that too well. You made a good choice and your gonna love it.
