Engine Noise #2

Remove this ad
Lately ive been noticing an annoying noise under the hood. It coming from what I believe is the compressor. Noise starts when I have the heat on and stops when I turn it off. When looking under the hood its the pulley that has a triangle on it. Located on the bottom towards the front. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Is it something I may be able to do in my garage?

Thanks
MacK

Re: Engine Noise #2

That would be the A/C compressor. Run the car with the climate control set low, and press the A/C off button. If the noise goes away, then it's the compressor. Can you describe the noise better?

Re: Engine Noise #2

If the noise persists after turning off the A/C, then it is just the clutch.

Re: Engine Noise #2

Well I didnt have the ac on.. Had the temp set at 80 degrees.. Ill have to reply back with the noise.. Can't recall it right now.. Haven't turned on the heat in all week due to the noise. What I am sure of is that when the pulley with the triangle on it stops turning the noise stops.

Re: Engine Noise #2

Sounds like your compressor is shot...If you have defog on the compressor would cycle on with heat also. It's a PITA to get at. There are always a couple compressor's floating around ebay for the northstar's.

Re: Engine Noise #2

The pully itself turns all the time. The center (triangle) is the clutch. When the center is turning, the clutch is engaged and the compressor is running. If the noise follows the clutch engagement and thus the compressor, it sounds like the compressor is bad.
