98 Seville stalling when it rains....

Remove this ad
Hi guys I just bought a 98 Seville about a month ago from a friend's relative. So far I absolutely love the car, but just recently I have noticed that it stalls when it is raining, usually when I am stopped, but it did it once when I was going 40mph. Just wondered if anyone knew what would cause this problem, and if it's serious. If someone could help me out that would be awesome!

Re: 98 Seville stalling when it rains....

Buy some "wire dryer" from the parts store (Some folks use WD40)
And put it on your plugs and in the distributor..

Well see I have never done that to a newer automobile so make sure it is alright

Northstar doesn't have a distributor.

Then you had better not put anything on it
Since it hasn't got one

Re: 98 Seville stalling when it rains....

Throw some clean water in a spray bottle. Pop the hood at night while it's dark, and spray a fine mist over the plugs. If you seen any arcing (however small it might be) than that's your problem. It's seems early, but it sounds liek it's time for you to buy new wires. Over time, the insulation can degrade causing the electricity to jump through the wire to ground (i.e. engine block,..ect). If it's bad enough, liek during a rain storm or whatever, it can arc bad enoguh to the point where there isn't enough voltage making it ot the plugs to jump the gap. Thats' why the engine is stalling. I have to say though, that having it completely stall out due to this is somewhat uncommon, but not unheard of. Those wires must be in pretty bad shape. Also, any wires other than AC Delco and you could be asking for trouble. Some people have had blower motors fail due to RFI from aftermarket wires.

Re: 98 Seville stalling when it rains....

I am having same problem with my 98 Seville STS. Stalls at idle when raining. It doesn't happen very often. So far it has done it at idle & it has always restarted with no problems.

Re: 98 Seville stalling when it rains....

You guys need to read the sticky thread at the top of the main Seville Forum page titled "How to pull codes" from your car's built-in code reader/logging system. Read the entire sticky before you start. Write down all the displayed DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) numbers and whether they are Current or History. When you have them, go back to the "How to ......" link and click on the lines for the definitions of P,B,C, and U codes.

If something's wrong enough to stall the car a code will set with the faulty system noted.

Then come back to this thread - don't start another.

BTW, Do NOT "clear codes" at this time - just start a written log and turn off the key. You'll find out why later............

Re: 98 Seville stalling when it rains....

^for that, when my SES light was on and I simply would turn to the OFF position then the next time I start the car the SES light would be out and the codes sent to History
