Fuel grade: Is "super" always needed?

    Hi,

I have a 1999 Cadillac STS and from the manual, it says the car wants "super" fuel grade all the time. But I think what they meant is "recommended". Can I use 89(Special or PLus) fuel grade without worrying about the damage that might possibly done to it? Thanks.

You can safely use regular (87 octane).
This subject has been beat to death. Do a search for "Octane" and you will find enough reading to keep you busy for days.

Lots of debates, opinions and history on this... Search the archives...
The fact as per our long departed guru... is you can run 87 and the car will protect itself against damage...

Some noted a slight loss in performance... some have noted a slight loss in mileage... Performance lost is possible... mileage loss not so. In fact if your high-test is ethanol enriched you will get better mileage with regular as ethanol has less chemical energy than petrol.

Thanks. I did a search on "fuel" and didn't come up with a lot of good results. "Octane" is much better search word.

    I meant 89, not 87. So I'm good.
