    Coolant Smell

I have a 95 STS. There is a faint smell of coolant, which appears to be coming from the drivers side rear of the engine. Nothing is dripping on the ground and the car runs normally (temp reading is usually between 205-210).
Any ideas on what to check? I'd rather fix a minor leak now than have something blow and cause big problems later.

    Re: Coolant Smell

Remove the air intake ducting and air filter box. Run your fingers along the bottom edge of the water pump cover and see if there is any coolant there. That gasket has been known to seep. It has been redesigned. I had the same faint smell, in the same place on my '97 and that is where I traced it to. It was never enough to lower the coolant level so I never got around to replacing it before I sold it. The gasket is still on my work bench. "Never do today what you can put off til tomorrow"

On the other hand, it could be the water pump seal or the pump shaft seal. That would be on the back side. You'll need a mirror to see that.

Thanks Ranger. I'll check that out.
    One more question...
Was it just the gasket that was redesigned or was it the cover too?
And not too be too much of a pain in the behind, but do you happen to know the part #?

    Re: Coolant Smell

I think it was just the gasket. GM part #12573948.
