91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Remove this ad
Hello,
My 91 eldo will not start. The engine turns over and it says that all monitored systems are OK. Then the battery light comes on and the check oil light comes on and the engine does not catch to start. I had the oil replaced three days ago and the battery was replaced about a week ago. 90K miles. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Matt

Check your fuel pressure.

Re: 91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Get a fuel pressure guage. Locate the shreader valve (looks just like a tire valve) on the fuel rail. Remove the cap and srew on the guage. Turn the key ON to energize the fuel pump and pressurize the fuel system and see what kind of pressure you have. Also see what it reads while cranking. Should be around 45 psi if memory serves me correctly.

Re: 91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Check your battery cables. I have a similiar problem, it won't turn right away sometimes, I gotta hold it for a few seconds. I asked Dimmit Cadillac and they said the Battery Cables are either coroded or just very dirty. I think he said Coke and Baking Soda on them will clean them right up. Been too lazy to worry bout it.

Re: 91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Cool thanks for the tips, I'm gonna try the battery thing. I wonder if I use jumper cables to give it a little extra boost?

Inspect the battery cables closely. Sometimes corrsion will work its way under the insulation. In that case, they need to be replaced.

Re: 91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Matt, i had the same problem with my eldo.it is more likely being the pick up coil in the distributor if it is a 4.9 engine.you have to takethe dist. out & mark the timing alignment--try this first.it could be the ignition module.it is right under the dist. cap.it's kindof oval shaped, black.&about 2'' long.replace it first.about 14$. if that does'ntwork itcould be the cam switch.it is underneath the round copper disc.it is black, about 1''long,held in by one screw on each end.can bend a small wrench to reach the screws.cam switch is $45.good luck. i'm looking for a power steering pressure switch for a 1992 eldo. sincerely, Rob

Re: 91 Eldorado- Engine turns over but won't start

Remove the fuel filler cap. Place your ear to the pipe and have someone turn the key on. You should hear the pump run for about 2 seconds. If not, a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail service port will confirm it.
