turned a/c on and smoke starts bellowing from engine bay

I was sitting in a parking lot on a 95° day waiting for someone and decided to turn the a/c on. All the sudden the rpms start jumping all over the place, sqealing belt? and smoke. It's fine when the a/c is off. Has anyone else had this problem? Bad condenser? Bad bearing? Any idea how hard to fix or replace. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like the compressor is seized. The pulley clutch engaged, the pulley stopped (instead if the compressor spinning) and the belt started rubbing on it and smoking.

It's the compressor that seizes. How long have you not used your A/C? Or have you had any weird symptoms?

You need a compressor, belt and receiver dryer and the system will need to be flushed because all the metal particles from the seized compressor are circulating though the system. I will never understand why people buy a Cadillac with "automatic" climate control and operate it as if it was a manual system in a Chevy? I dont turn the A/C on. I let the system engage the compressor when needed. Every car I've owned with automatic climate control, I set to around 72 degrees in the AUTO mode and leave it alone except for using the defrost button in the winter. Less wear on switches, less wear on the compressor.

I've never had auto climate control before owning this car. I prefer windows down over a/c so I RARELY used it. It just so happened that this day I was waiting on someone and sitting in direct sunlight and decided use it. I will take your advice in the future and set the control to whatever temp and let it do it on it's own. Its just a bummer cause the guy I was waiting on was a person I was hoping to trade vehicles with. Of course, 5 mins before he shows up my car started acting up.

Don't forget the condenser. That too will need to be replaced.

Is it possible to just replace the clutch on the compressor?

Yes, but that won't do you any good. The clutch is working. When it's disengaged, the pulley spins freely. When you turn the A/C on, the clutch engages to spin the compressor. But since yours is seized, it just stops completely, and the belt burns.
