I bought a really clean, 15,000 mile 2000 model RHD Seville STS for a good price. The car is lovely but there are a couple of issues I need to sort out.
1) The speaker in the passenger door isn't working, it just crackles.
I figure I probably need to replace it, can anyone tell me where I can buy a replacement (no Cadillac dealers in the UK anymore) and how much it might cost?
2) The BOSE combined CD/Casette/Radio is behaving strangely.
ALL the indicator lights (eg sources and RDS info) are permanently on.
For example, the car has a CD Changer, although there is no cartridge loaded, and it has no minidisc. Yet the source indicators show that those sources are present. Also, the indicators for PTY, RDS etc are all constantly illuminated, even when I turn those features off. Anyone seen that before?
3) Also, and maybe this is related to the above, when I lock the car the security light on the dash illuminates for maybe 10-20 seconds. Then the security light goes out and the radio source indicators all light up for say 10-seconds seconds. Then they go off. Is that right?
4) The security light stays illuminated on the dash when I'm driving. The alarm works, I tried opening the boot after setting the alarm and it went off. So I assume (according to the manual) that the imobiliser doesn't work. Anyone know what part I need to repalce and what it might cost? Again, where can I get that part, there are no longer Cadillac dealers in the UK.
5) And finally, the drivers (RHD remember) door mirror folds back electrically but I can't adjust it using the 4 way switch because, while I can hear the motor whirring, the glass doesn't seem to be attached (it's very loose to move by hand). Again, any suggestions on how to fix it?
6) The battery voltage reads 16.4V with the engine running or not. That seems too high as the manual says it should not be more than 15.5v but the dash says "OK".
7) Oh, the car is missing its CD changer cartridge, where can I get a replacement and how much are they?

Hmmm - some interesting electrical gremlins you seem to be having. Have you pulled codes yet? I'd be willing to bet there will be several electrical and AMP codes that will get you started in the right direction.
Check Ebay for the cartridge first, gmpartsdirect second.
Here's my electrical theory -
First off, you said the door speaker is crackling. That means it's shot and needs to go. The door panel is easy to remove. There is a current thread in this forum about it with my post for the procedure. The speakers set me back about $75 each or so from www.gmpartsdirect.com. I'm not sure if they ship to the UK or not. You'll have to check. They have an (800) number you can call to get the parts you need if you don't know the part number(s).
That leads me to part two. Does your car have a sunroof? If not, then I'm afraid I'll have to refer you back to pulling codes. If so, then check your sunroof drain tubes. If they are clogged, water is most likely entering your passenger compartment and finding the path of least resistance, which happens to take its course right over your speakers, ruining them along the way. This could also be the source of your electrical problems as water is entering the dash area. Worst case scenario here is that your drain tubes have pulled away from the sunroof frame and respective drain holes. If this is the case, water will drain - but directly into the cabin. This was my problem. I dropped the headliner and superglued the tubes back to the frame drains, followed up with a generous amount of sealant to prevent future leaks. I replaced both front speakers because they were ruined. I also had many strange electrical quirks revolving around the amplifier and dashboard. Once the drains were repaired, I've not had these electrical issues return.
Hopefully your solution is an easy one. Good luck from across the pond.
I'll try GM Parts Direct for the cartridge and speaker.
Also, I'll put a multi meter across the battery.
According to the receipts that came with the car it's on it's 3rd battery in 5 years.
Where does the dash get its voltage reading from?
I don't have a sunroof so how do I pull codes?
Also, how do I pull the radio out?
Is there a Haynes or Chiltons manual for these cars?
When I take the key out of the ignition I notice the steering wheel doesn't lock as per cars I've had in the past, is this normal?
Noticed something strange this morning.
Got in the car and fired her up and the reading was 14.3V
And the security light was not lit.
Waited a minute for the screen to clear.
Looked down and the security light came on.
The voltage reading was now 16.4v
So, either the voltage goes up to 16.4 and trips out the security system, or the security system plays up and triggers the voltage rise...
Have you checked the computer codes to see what is wrong with the security system? I bet you are right, the voltage gets too high, and a code is set for a high voltage condition for the security system. You may have a problem with the alternators voltage regulator.
Ahh...I hope that's it. A simple Voltage Regulator. That could explain everything except the crackling speaker. I hope the high voltage didn't fry anything.

The security system won't affect the alternator. Likely vice versa. Check the voltage across the battery terminals with a meter with the engine running. It should be around 14+ at just after startup and 13+ after a bit. 16.4 is too high. Check your grounds before you replace anything.
I fixed 2 problems this evening.
Hopefully this info will be usreful for someone in future...
Hooked up a multimeter to the battery with the engine off, read just over 12V.
Started the engine and multimeter read 14.3V
Dash still said 16.4V under both conditions so it's obviously not getting the right signal.
Then I noticed a small 1 or 2 pin cable with a grey connector was unplugged in the loom near the battery.
Connected it and hey presto, the dash read the voltage correctly and the Security light is no longer illuminated when driving.
The radio is still not right, the 2 line display (top line is dot matrix for track number etc, bottom line is just row of symbols for different functions and sources) has all it's symbols constantly illuminated regardless of function.
How do I get the radio out? There's no apparent means.
Also, near the battery is red (orange?() wire and a blue wire that both go into a large red plastic square. This has no apparent contacts and looks like it clips to something. It's currently not attached to anything but it reaches the battery.
Battery temp sensor maybe?
As the battery in there is not a GM one there's no apparent place to attach it.
Here's a pic:
I also found a short length of rubber hose, say 2-3 inches. Where does that go, it's not apparent?

Cool can't imagine anything quite as unique as a RHD STS!
Mirror issue...
1) You need to snap it back in... Lots of posts on how to do this...
2) Cut a 2x4 (40mmx80mm in England) the height of the glass and use this tool to snap the glass back in do not press in the middle of the glass
3) some white grease on the middle "dimple" helps
4) There are 4 other connectors on the back of the mirror that need connection too... Make sure they are all hooked up...
5) It takes some pressure to push the glass in I would have a friend provide resistance on the housing.
Radio re&re
1) you need to remove the wood from the console around the gear selector
2) place the car in neutral
3) use a hook tool to gently and carefully pull up on the wood bit at the back corners by the TRAC switch.
4) Work you way forward, when its free turn it 90 degrees out of the way... There should be enough wire on the seat heater switches to do this
5) At the botom of the HVAC unit there are 2 7mm screws remove them
6) At the top of the radio there is a crescent shaped piece of charcoal coloUred plastic... remove it with your fingers (squish them in there) or use a hook tool
7) behind it is a single 7mm screw/bolt remove it
8) the HVAC and Radio come out as a unit. The radio is attached on the side with 4 10mm nuts... Remove them disconnect the wires and your radio is free!
Yes, Haynes and Chilton manuals exist, they are great for starting fires and/or toilet paper when you are camping.
ONLY buy the Helms book and get the right set for your year of car.
Good Luck!
