    Service emissions and P 0174

Well, to keep threads on topic and off this subject and less clutter, I'll ask away on this one!

So, I have the "Service Emissions System" Message and PC0174.

New PCV valve and grommet coming in, if that doesnt fix it, what do I check for and where? Pictures would be nice showing what to check.

Thanks everyone I can't express enough how greatful I am for all the help I've been getting

For some reason you have lean fuel trim in Bank 2 - the left (front) bank. Vacuum leak or sticking fuel injector.

File this link for future reference - it sure helps when the definitions of DTCs are posted along with the code.

The PCV valve and grommet are on the right (rear) bank, Bank 1, so replacing the PCV valve and grommet probably won't help much. Check the vacuum lines on the left bank side.

Could I possibly see a diagram of the vacuum lines? My mechanic thinks I'm missing a line but not positive. It was night time so it wasn't really able to be checked good.

Also - replaced valve and grommet. Code came up during a drive today.

Thanks I'll check it out in the morning.

Anything else to look for besides vacuum leaks, should I do a seafoam treatment?

Leave the Seafoam where it is - on some store shelf. Forget the urge to pour magic potions and snake oil into the oil or gasoline.

    Google "top tier gasoline".

Well on the website it says to check the fuel filter.
I checked the fuel sitting in the fuel filter once. DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY. This was during fuel pump replacement.

I checked it a few minutes ago, pretty dirty (Almost black) so I'll be replacing it tomorrow.

    It ain't the filter.

And the filter holds the contaminants. Fuel "in" (?) the filter should not "look" dirty. Where are you looking? The filter is under the car, and not transparent...

Maybe the fuel he looked at was from the inlet side of the filter - in that case it could drip out some particles and dirt.

One reason that, like my oil filters, I cut them apart and inspect the media for the type of crap trapped there.

Black gasoline actually IN the filter after removal

Anyways I think I found my leak. After spraying carb cleaner on lines I heard a rpm raise near the TV
So after extensive spraying finding where it's actually spraying from, I found it was here

    What is this to?

So I actually found a rubber o ring (there was none there) that was perfect fit, tightened it up no more hiss or Rpm raise. Cleared code now let's hope it works!

That's the EGR exhaust gas inlet pipe. When EGR is operating, 900 degree exhaust gas flows through that pipe, thus the metal/fiber insulation sleeve.

Because the EGR valve is just out of the picture to the right, I wonder if there's a pintle leak - that valve should allow NO exhaust gas flow except under certain engine load conditions, and at idle is not one of them.

Hmm, well I'm going to drive her tonight and see if a code comes up.

" that valve should allow NO exhaust gas flow except under certain engine load conditions"
Could that be why the code would not constantly stay on and "service emissions"/ the code goes off usually after a couple restarts for short travel
