2001 STS: First major maintenance - costs in Netherlands !

    Hi guys,

It's been over a year since I bought my 2001 Cadillac Seville STS, I've driven about 6200 miles, and this year during the periodically test, something like M.O.T. and general maintenance I got my first big bill. It's done 143K Miles and do you guess what major has to be done?

    Let me build up the tension first with listing some general maintenance stuff that has to be done;
    • A/C Condensor is leaking and needs to be replaced
    • Rear tires need to be replaced
    • Lamda probe is giving weird readings and needs to be replaced
    • Headlights need to be polished, are too dull to pass inspection.
    • Right front stabilizer bushing is broken and needs to be replaced
    • Miscellaneous, Oil change etc.

Oh, and want to know what the costs are going to be? +/- €4500! ($6095)

    And now for the piece the resistance;
My rear shocks need to be replaced... (€1000 a shock, about $1354)

As I'm trying to keep the Seville as original as possible I'm going with the OEM shocks and am willing to pay the price. Just wanted to share with you guys in how these cars are behaving and how much the maintenance is outside of the US. Also, to inform people such as myself who are outside of the US and are interested in the Seville aswell.

Oh and for kicks, I have the maintenance history of the car and it has never had new shocks in those 13 years and lasted 143K Miles.

    Hope y'all find it usefull.

    Greetings,
    Dennis

$250 for tires ??? Half-decent V-rated tires go for $600+ out the door.

........... and remember - the OP can use the car to its fullest capabilities - legally............ so it's in his best interest to keep it in good condition. His STS is most probably a Z/W rated car.

TireRack - $250 you could get yourself a set of Eagle GT, he only needs 2 not 4

True, but with the speeds that Europeans drive at - daily - it makes sense to have a good set of tires on the car. I qualified my tire cost statement in the original post. Been there, done that.

It's a 2 hour somewhat drive for me to the German Autobahn, and believe you me there's nothing more exciting than pushing the STS to it's limits legally going after beamers and Mercedeses
I visit Germany almost every month and never can resist the tempation to give it some (legal ) WOT's.

Also yes my STS is W rated. Haven't got it up to top speed yet, fastest I've done was 147 MPH (236 KMH). So it's safe to say, it is in my best interest to keep her in good condition.

    Currently on the list:
    • 2x Rear shocks = €2500 ΰ $3400
    • Condensor = €650 ΰ $883
    • Maintenance (e.g. Oil, filter etc..) = €350 ΰ $475
    • Stabilizer link = €150 ΰ $204
    • Lambdaprobe = €250 ΰ $340
    • 2x Continental Premium Contact 2 = €400 ΰ $544
    • 2x Polish headlights = €75 ΰ $102
    • Miscellaneos items = €100 ΰ $136

The prices are an indication and including labour, I will update it when I get my Cadillac back and the invoice ofcourse.

I can only imagine driving a STS on the Autobahn! Verdomme! Just returned from NL, I was up north in GN. Took a few trips into Germany, Hamburg and down to Dusseldorf.

BTW, I recently ran across a good selection of used parts on the German eBay.

    Haha, nice one!

And oh, do you still have the link? Would you like to share?

On another note, I got my Cadillac back, as well as an invoice that's 3 pages long... Yikes!
    So here goes;
    • Yearly maintenance €130,96 ($178,23)
    • Fortron airco treatment €16,14 ($21,97)
    • Fortron Petrol Injectioncleaner €12,00 ($16,33)
    • Fuel Filter €24,26 ($33,01)
    • Oil Filter €9,60 ($13,07)
    • Air Filter €41,83 ($56,93)
    • Drainplug €1,76 ($2,40)
    • Cabin Air Filter €76,18 ($103,68)
    • 7 Liters 5W30 Dexos II oil €74,20 (7,4 Quart $100,98)
    • Washerfluid €4,36 ($5,93)
    • M.O.T. €10,86 ($14,78)
    • 2x Rear Shocks (including fitting costs) €1800,76 ($2450,74) (Part €802,16 ($1091,70) a piece, €196,44 ($267,34) for fitting)
    • 2x rear tires + road balance + mounting €289,20 ($393,58) (Roadbalance and mounting €24,00 ($32,66)) For Continental Premium 2 (good quiet, comfy tires)
    • 2x Wiper blades €27,88 ($37,94)
    • A/C Condensor + Mounting €531,28 ($723,04) (Part €269,36 ($366,58), fitting €261,92 ($356,46))
    • Front Stabilizor link + Mounting €59,14 ($80,49) (Part €26,40 ($35,93), fitting €32,74 ($44,56))
    • Lamda sensor Pos.1 + Mounting €189,39 ($257,75) (Part €91,17 ($124,08), fiitting €98,22 ($133,67))
    • Diagnose too high CO2 % & Replacement of Miscelaneous hoses €130,96 ($178,23)
    • Polish headlights €65,48 ($89,11)
    • repair rear brakes €98,22 ($133,67) (They seemed to stick on)
    • Small material €41,99 ($57,15)

    Total of €4403,52 ($5 992,94)!

Further more, they accidently reset my exit memory, turned off the auto ext. and int. lights and bumped my driverside mirror (no damage though). Also I had to go back once for the rear brakes... It made a horrible vibrating sound while braking.. Turned out the brakepad was only using the top end of the disk... They needed to adjust it, of no charge ofcourse. But I lost a day and some gas, having to take the day off and drive there, in the process...

I was a little bit disappointed in the garage, especially after how wonderfull they have helped me last year... But atleast my car is in good condition now, gets better mileage aswell! And am willing to give them another chance next year. But I hope the service will be better then.

Well... That's my story! You guys shocked, or does it match with USA pricing?

Re: 2001 STS: First major maintenance - costs in Netherlands !

Actually, the pricing is not that much more than any large metropolitan Cadillac dealership would charge for the same list. In those shops the labor rates are now $90 to $120 USD/hour. Many people buy a Cadillac at rock bottom prices and expect the maintenance to follow suit - Not so. These cars are expensive to maintain to original build quality. Many owners choose to degrade the car by using parts not originally designed for the particular car and its features, so in many cases what you see is a Cadillac body with inferior guts.

DJP, look through www.rockauto.com - they ship international.

rockauto has fe3 shocks for $500 each. any idea what they would cost delivered to your door? after import fees? you would be the 3rd member here out of 12,000 to actually install new fe3 shocks.

Don't know for how much they will ship it to my door. What I do know, is that for stuff I am to do for myself I'll probably resort to rockauto, thanks!
Also found gmpartsgiant.com , not sure if they ship all the way though...

And 3rd member? Woow, all I can say is that I want to keep as original as possible. I'm in too much of an awe for this car ;-)

stoveguyy tends to overstate things once in a while.

And they're F45 CVRSS/RSS struts/shocks - FE3 is the suspension level and sprinng package - "Suspension system sport".
