Unusual, and somewhat disturbing noise....

Well, I was leaving my school last night, and while turning onto the main road at the light I gave it gas like I always to to get ahead of traffic. I'm usually in third gear when I make the turn and give it just enough gas to get into second gear, so I can pass all the slow Honda's and crap in front of me. Well last night, after I hit the gas, it downshifted in to second gear, but then slipped into first. When it did this, the car let out a loud screach from underneath up in the front. It's the first time it's ever dropped a gear and allowed the clutches to slip like that. It shifter from first, to back into second, then third and fourth just liek normal after that though, and was perfectly fine the rest of the night though all the way back to my apartment. My shift solenoids have been clicking loudly for the past couple of months everytime they engage a different gear, and they have kind of gotten a little slow sometimes, as far as the time it takes the car to downshift and upshift. I'm definitely going to change out the shift solenoids and replace the tranny fluid and what not in two weeks if I have the time. I was really just curious to knwo whether or not any one else has every had there car drop a gear on them, while slipping into the lower gear and then not had a single problem afterwards? It's almost liek it was trying to fight the downshift when it happened, which my be why the shift was so dawn out, causing the clutches to slip. I'm going to check the trans fluid tomorrow, and make sure there's no hint of burnt clutches. Anyway, if anyone has any thought on this, please feel free to chime in. Thanks.

Did it sound like squealing tires? That'll feel like a slipping clutch.

Possibly the serpentine belt.
I hope your tranny's still OK.

Re: Unusual, and somewhat disturbing noise....

the car fighting the downshift sounds like what the car does when traction control kicks in and applys brakes and pulls timing. Im not sure about the loud screech other than your tires? as bigred said the only kind of screech ive heard out of my car other than tires was the serp belt.

Re: Unusual, and somewhat disturbing noise....

The RPM were only at 3600 or so when it slipped into first. I'm well aware of what screaching tires sound like, but I am also aware of what slipping clutches sound like, and that's what kind of sound this was.

The serpentine belt is fine and has nothing to do with it. The car wasn't fighting to shift at all. You guys obviously either didn't read, or understand what I said in my previous post. The transmission slipped out of second into first. If the car was fighting the downshift, it would have stayed in second. I didn't give it nearly enough RPM's to warrant a downshift into first.

If anyone has any REAL input on what happened please respond. Those of you with nothing better to do than increase your post count don't bother.

Re: Unusual, and somewhat disturbing noise....

maybe its the explaination thats causing the problem.

You did give it enough RPM to warrrant a gear change???

Or do you mean you didnt step on the gas enough to warrant a gear change.

Stuff like this would help out alot.

And if when it shifted into first, you were only at 3600, thats hardly even on the gas, that just normal shifting. About 1/4 gas at that speed might give u a downshift to first.

I was in Third gear when I stepped on the gas and downshifted into second gear. I have it has always held second gear while giving it the amount of gas that I did, at the speed I was going, except this time, it didn't hold secpnd gear. It SLIPPED into first, cause the screach from the clutches. It felt like driving a manual with bad syncros, like it pooped out of gear, except it just sliiped into a lower one.

I only gave it just enough gas to downshift into second, because I usually wind second gear out pretty far in this road, before I let the car upshift. As I said before, I didn't give the car nealry enough gas to cause two downshifts, not to mention the fact that if I had, it would have gone right to first gear from third, and then upshift back to second. But it didn't do that. It donshifted into second gear, and then maybe two seconds later slipped into first gear. I had to let off the gas to get the car to upshift again back into second gear.
