2001 Eldorado stall issues as it warms up

My uncle has a 2001 El Dorado when he starts up the car if he sits in it and talks to me for six minutes it will stall out and then not start. he moves it into neutral and it will start right up. Another symptom is while he's driving it will occasionally stall out when he's going downhill.

My initial thoughts is he has a short somewhere in his system on the positive side because occasionally he also has to reset the radio stations and Clock etc.

I don't see my uncle all the time so I can't help him quickly he lives 55 minutes from me.

Am I on the right track or my barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks ahead of time for any comments I do appreciate it

    ----------

Oh I forgot when he was at my house on Easter it does have service engine light but he wasn't there long enough for me to figure out what codes he has.

And the other thought I had is that it has to do with the antitheft system and I'm worried I might have to Teat apart the steering column.

You need to use the sticky post just above this - "How to pull codes" - to see if there's a diagnostic code stored in the car's built-in reader/scanner.

The symptoms sound like a CKP fault. CKP ??? Read the sticky post "Acronyms".

    I think I posted that - #2.

Sounds a lot like bad CKP sensors. GM had a bad supplier from 2000-2003. Always replace both of them.

My uncle called me today and we talked about his possible crankshaft position sensor replacement to confirm what his shop told him. I told my uncle I might be able to do it but he was going to have his mechanic do it anyway. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I appreciate your help to confirm what his mechanic told him so that my uncle would not be taken to the cleaners.

His mechanic verbally quoted 300 to 350 for the job. Don't know if that was for both sensors or just one.

My uncle also told me today that his mechanic has the same 2001 El Dorado and the same color and had already done that fix a couple years ago.

    Thank you all.

    Mike

I will call my uncle and make sure he follows my instructions. Although he is 80 years old.

That doesn't sound too bad. I think a dealer price is $400-$450.

Talked to my uncle yesterday. The advice you gave me was PERFECT. Exactly what was wrong with his car. Thank you all for helping me diagnose the problem. And me giving him the information helped him feel very comfortable talking to his mechanic about it.

    Thank you all!!

    Mike
