Bushing problem 95 Eldorado - rear suspension ?

I think my mechanic is trying to jerk me around,I have had this rattle in the rear of my caddy and I cant go over 40 mph without severe shaking of the whole car so I took it to somebody I never been to and they broke it down on the lift and showed me the bushings on the rear upper control arm needed to be replaced then on the lower part he said I needed the entire spindle knuckle but wait it gets better, then he said I needed this on both sides of the car the upper control arms cost were 100 a piece and the spindles are 110 apiece, now i'm already 200 deep in parts and I dont think I want him to finish da job,the right side is the one that needs the utmost attention, all this happened because of the air ride suspension, gonna replace with coil over gas shocks,do you have any tips to make this less painless by the way I went to talk to a few other mechanics and they said you cant just do bushings,i'm on the internet way to much to just believe that, any suggestions greatly appreciated!

You're worried about $200 in parts on a 19 year old car? That doesn't see so far fetched to me.

Hard to tell from here what it needs and doesn't need, but I would recommend against coil overs (unless you don't mind a '69 Chevy pick up truck ride).

A $200 repair on these cars is nothing.

+1 on the shocks with helper springs. They'll give you a harsher ride, the rear will be too Hugh when unloaded, to low when more fully loaded, and they can get noisy.

all this happened because of the air ride suspension,

FIRST - your Eldorado does NOT have AIR-RIDE SUSPENSION -
in fact - NO Cadillac - since the 50's - has had air suspension -

your car has COIL SPRINGS on all 4 corners -
and the coil springs are controlled by regular oil-filled struts and shocks -

the rear shocks do have air bladders incorporated -
a vital part of the Electronic Level Control system -

the ELC system is designed to raise the BODY - in the rear only -
to maintain PROPER RIDE HEIGHT -
with additional weight in the back seat and/or trunk -

AND - there is NO-WAY the ELC system "CAUSED" bushings to wear out -
more likely the bushings wore out because they are 19 YEARS old -
    -----------------------

gonna replace with coil over gas shocks,
THAT would be a HUGH MISTAKE -

    coil-overs are noisy -

they WILL make your Cadillac ride like a 1-ton truck -

your car will NEVER be at the proper ride-height -

with a full load in the back seat or trunk -
the rear end WILL sit too low -

with nothing in the back seat and trunk -
the rear end WILL sit too high -

    ---------------

you need to find a REAL MECHANIC -
one who has at least a BASIC UNDERSTANDING of suspension systems -

sounds like you have only talked to CLOWNS and PARTS CHANGERS -

I don't know what bushings your car might need -

    rear bushings ARE available -

    go to rockauto.com -

Don't bother with Arnott. They're overpriced. Most here will suggest Monroe's.

the main point is that the Monroes are FAR SUPERIOR struts and shocks -
the fact that they are less expensive is BIG BONUS -

Re: Bushing problem 95 Eldorado - rear suspension ?

Knuckle bushings can be replaced without the need of replacing the casting. Is ~$28 upper and ~$31 lower, times 2 + labor (~2h).
These cars cost money to maintain if you are worried about $200 you definitely own the wrong car and will give you nothing but reasons to complain. Using cheap (=low quality) parts will just make a bad thing worst. Either consider a different less complex vehicle or adjust the budget. I am brutally honest, consider it as a friendly advise, I am not trying to bash you.
Definitely forget about coilovers that is the stuff you put in a go-go cart, not in a Cadillac.
The vehicle is equipped with very sophisticated electronically controlled struts and in the rear has also air level assist. This is why Cadillac (if properly maintained) is always at the same height regardless of the stuff on the trunk and rear seat, while the other cars are dragging their derričre.
I would suggest to look for a different mechanic, ELC has no effect over the bushings, all ELC does is provides a bit of assistance to the rear springs, 19 years of potholes (and 19 seasons cold/hot) will be what is affecting the bushings.
