on the display panel that shows clock etc. Did you fix yours yet ? Did you have to
replace something called "Cluster" ? Thanks Toney |

First thing to check is a module called "central power supply" its located above the gas pedal mounted vertically, held on a bracket by 2 10 mm nuts, silver in color, says central power supply on the decal on the module. . Loosen the nuts enough to slide it free of it bracket. Let it dangle from under the dash. Then slap it with the palm of your hand, key on, engine off. If the cluster blinks on or stays on, inspect the multiwire connector to the CPS for faulty pins first. If the connector looks fine get one from a wreck and swap it out. Were known for failed solder joints on the circuit board. They are used on Eldos as well as Sevilles. They were used to stabilize the voltage to the illumination and would go open and the displays would quit. If not the CPS the next likely culprit is the BCM. |

The improved Central power supply part number on the decal is 16088406. Improved solder connections, running change. |

I have an 88 Eldo that is suffering the same problems... the dash panel has problems at night when the twilight sentinel is in use - it flickers from bright to dim to bright repeatedly which drives me bananas. Very distracting because sometimes it goes so dim I can't read it and I have to toggle the dash brightness slider to get it to lighten up again.
Tonight on my way home from the hairdresser I saw the right side of my climate control panel was not lit. Lo, Norm, Hi, and Warmer buttons still worked but the back-light wouldn't come on. I even tried a full system diagnostic thinking that it would light up like every thing else for a bulb-self-test and that didn't work. The left side lights but not the right... and the digital temp display is not affected...it's the weirdest thing.
I'm going to pull the dash apart tomorrow down to the console and see if I can find any grounding issues or loose connections. If not, I'm going to plan another date to the junkyard for next weekend (junkyard and dinner it is really a fantastic fun date). I'll see if I can pull another climate control panel. Is there anything else I should grab while I'm out and if so are they identifiable by imprinted part numbers so I know it's the right part? I have the factory service manual but it was very vague in places and really not helpful except for disassembly diagrams. |

Yes, pull the CPS (central power supply) from a wreck. Its just above the gas pedal, mounted vertically. Held on a bracket with 2 10 mm nuts. Loosen the nuts, slide off the bracket and unplug. Go to www.allantesource.com and read the info on CPS failure. It will give you the updated part number. Allante, Seville and Eldo all share this part. I would also get a headlight switch, maybe the reostat is worn within it? The CPS part supplies a strong steady voltage to all displays. I posted this almost a year ago within this thread. I even provided the part number! |

I'm on my 4th or 5th (I forget by now) Twilight Sentinel replacement module. It seems that it fixes the problem for a few months and as soon as there is a major temperature change it goes haywire again. Living in PA it could be 80+°F one day and then mid 30s°F that night, if I drove it during the heat and then try to drive it that night it will cause the flicker to reoccur and I end up replacing the module again. *sigh* I can live with that but the half light climate control panel is not acceptable!
It just struck me as really odd that the left half of the ECC works just fine but the right half has no back light, I tested with/without twilight on, with/without parkings lights on, with/without interior lights on, and during a diagnostic bulb-test. I'm currently digging through my service manual to see what fuses it might be routed through and where the ground terminates. I had a major grounding issue a while ago and my mechanic couldn't guarantee the ground in my engine block firewall (he couldn't get to it) so he installed a second ground off of the same cable which I've already tested.
Someone said it possible to replace the bulb behind the assembly similar to the warning lights in the dash panel.... but I can find no diagrams or instructions or anything showing me that's possible. The service manual just had a blurb saying "if any of the lights do not light during the bulb-illumination test, replace the CCDIC" - does this mean I have to replace both the ECC and DIC at the same time (are they attached as one unit?) or can I just replace the ECC without touching the DIC? |

All the Cadillac service manuals say when replacing the twilight sentinal module it must be replaced with the optic sensor at the same time. Something about a resistance value match. |

I knew about the optic sensor, but for some reason the manual's explanation of resistance value baffles me because I had my garage mechanic test the last 2 I had installed (thinking I had a mismatch and it was giving a bad reading) but the reading was the same on both.
I'm seriously leaning towards ground fault issue or a loose wire.... It's got to be something, I understand from other owners that the 88's suffer from mysterious electrical gremlins routinely. <humor>I wonder if the sneaky is related to the sock-stealing gnome?</humor> I'm going to spend this evening upside-down in my driver's seat with my head under the dash in hopes I find something simple to fix. I find it's the only position where I can see everything without whacking my head on the steering wheel constantly. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
