blown head gasket - reasonable cost?

Remove this ad
Bleh. My car decided to die spectacularly; bubbling coolant and white clouds of smoke billowing from the exhaust. I had it towed to a repair shop, and they say the problem is a blown head gasket. Which makes sense. They say that it will cost $1800 to fix; is this reasonable? If not, I'm about sixty miles from home...any chance you can drive sixty miles with a blown head gasket?

88 Cadillac El Dorado, btw.

From what I've heard on here, that's very reasonable. Did they tell you how long they would take before you get your car back though?

Re: blown head gasket - reasonable cost?

If You Are At A Gas Station Or A Ma And Pa Repair Shop, I Would Greatly Consider Taking It To A Caddie Repair Shop Or Better Yet A Caddie Dealer. I Have Found With My Other Cars That The Dealer Is Not Much Cheaper Than Other Mechanics And They See This Type Of Problem All The Time And Have The Parts And Experience On Hand.
Good Luck

Seems to me like a reman. engine isnt much more than that. for a 4.5 to me $1800 seems a bit high.

1800 seems a bit high. I wouldnt take it to the dealer, any good tech can repair the HG on that engine.
