OK, I see. There where two parts (upper and lower) to post #8.

You where referring to the upper part and I thought he was asking the question referring to the lower part when he asked "Do i do this while the car is running or while it's off", to which you answered "Both".

If you have access to $10 then you have access to a DVM. Everybody should have one (should be a law), available at any store (including Walmart).

Just measure the voltage at the battery terminals, first engine OFF, ignition OFF a normal reading should be ~12.4V.
Engine ON, depends on for how long and what RPM but a normal reading should be between 13.2V and 14.8V.
The 15.6V is WAY too high, something is wrong, either not measured right or something is really wrong..., no way it can be 15.6V with engine OFF, no way!

Black wire with white stripe and gray connector sounds aftermarket to me (warning bells when I hear aftermarket).

Sorry guys, I understood. I just took my car to Autozone and they checked it at the battery. At the battery according to them it tested fine. 14.2 with car on. Test showed alternator was fine. Just for kicks when I got home I left the car running and disconnected the battery completely and the car stayed on. I turned the car off and connected the negative and positive for 5 seconds then connected positive first then the negative. With car off I turned the key and battery voltage is still at 15.6. Same with car on.

    You are extremely lucky
to still have an alternator and voltage regulator, much less a functioning electrical system. NEVER disconnect the battery, even if it is suspected to be faulty, from a running car's electrical system. NEVER !

This "turn the key on and get 15.6 volts" - is that the DIC (instrument panel / Driver Information Center) voltage or is that measured at the battery terminals using a VOM ?? There is no way on earth that a "12 volt" battery will put out 15.6 volts just sitting there. If you're getting 15.6 on the DIC with the engine off, that's a DIC problem. If you're getting 15.6 with the engine running, using a VOM, that's a voltage regulator problem.

FWIW, a fully charged lead/acid wet cell (there are 6 in a car battery) puts out 2.1 volts X 6 = 12.6 volts full charge. It will NOT "charge up" any higher.

Impossible. With the key OFF (or ON, engine off) a 12 Volt battery CAN NOT put out more than 12.6 Volts.

Did you understand Post 21 ?

    Let me better explain:
Car off at battery 11.6 DIC 15.6
Car on at battery 14.2 DIC 15.6

Ok, if the battery tests at 12.0 or less it's in all likelihood no good.

Have the battery load tested and replace if necessary (pretty much guaranteed).

Low voltage can cause all kinds of odd electrical issues. Maybe it's causing the incorrect DIC readouts.

OK - You may have a DIC problem. Maybe N*Caddy can chime in. - or the diagnostic trees in the GM/Helm service manual.

    ............ but I don't like that 11.6 battery reading - that's a dead battery.

I will replace the battery again tonight. I remember before the first battery went out I was getting 14.5 or so with the car on. After a while I started having the problem with it going dead overnight. Change the battery because they said it was no good. Second battery was fine til we had a freeze. Then same problem. Dead overnight. But that's when my 15.6 popped up. Now 3rd battery acting same. Guess I'll replace and c what happens

I just replaced the battery in my wife's car yesterday because it would barely crank. Battery voltage was tested (by me) at the battery with a DVM at 12.1v. If yours tested at 11.6, it is toast.
