    ETC Bose replacement question.....

I have done ALL of my research on aftermarket caddy systems. I also have some experience doing them myself. I have decided to replace my fantastic paper cone woofers with 6x9 in mid bass woofeds in back and 6.5 in midrange speakers in front. My question is: what are the front/ rear ohm loads respectively? I can't seem to find them, and if they're odd are the stock amplifiers capable of being brought down to different ohm loads by wiring techniques?

    Re: ETC bose replacement question.....

The Bose systems use drivers of less than 2 ohm impedance. No way to alter (individual) amp output taps. With the Bose you either replace the entire system, wiring and all (as well as keep the original HU in-circuit to keep TheftLock and vehicle warning systems intact) - or replace the OEM Bose speakers.

Surf through the Audio, Video, Security forum in Item Specific for ideas.

Infinity Kappa or Reference line will work with the Bose amplifiers

Refs are 4 ohm kappa are 2. Big difference in resistance.

    Example:

Lets assume the Bose amp outputs 100 watts @ 1 ohm

Bose 1 ohm speaker gets 100 watts.

Ref with 4 ohm gets 25 watts.

Kappa with 2 ohm gets 50 watts.

Either speaker will require the volume to be higher to produce the same level of audio output as the Bose amps leading to more distortion and clipping which is murder to a speaker.

    I could be wrong - but -
I thought the BOSE amp was mounted directly on each BOSE speaker at that time -

    Re: ETC Bose replacement question.....

I believe you are correct. Pretty sure that's the case in a '97 Eldo.

OP. Get an AudioControl line out converter and be done with it. Tap the AudioControl unit into the OEM wiring and use the pre-outs from that to run amplifier's of your choosing as well as whatever speakers you want, all while keeping the OEM HU installed and connected in it's original place. Some of AudioControl's units even have an AUX input as well

No ref have the ability to handle a 2 ohm amp. They are not a 2 ohm speaker. Check it out.

    Under each ref speaker

    "True 4-ohm architecture.
The Infinity® Reference X series’ low-impedance voice coils make the most of the power they receive from the amplifier, extracting the strongest sound pressure levels (SPL) and the clearest sound from factory systems."

    Kappa

    "2-ohm nominal impedance
The 2-ohm nominal impedance of the Infinity Kappa speakers allows compensation for any added resistance in thin factory-installed speaker wiring and provides more output than factory speakers in its class."

Yes. Eldo has 4 mini amps. Rears are mounted on the speaker fronts inside the Bose boxes.

    Re: ETC Bose replacement question.....

Yes, they are. And the fronts are mounted beside the speakers in the kick panel. I found power acoustics all the way around that are true 1 ohm operational. I am not trying to put more power. The stock speakers are just blown. Well, the two rears are. I have already pulled the two rear amps out and extended the wires and properly mounted the amps on the fender wells. (Self tapping screws, non-silicone sealenr, and rubber grommets to prevent vibrational damage. I also kept the amps cooling surface pointed towards the trunk lid to prevent overheating. I have also bought 1/2 inch micro density fibre board to adjust for stock fastener templates. All I have to do is decide on a set of speakers.

    ----------

I have decided to put reference series components all the way around. 6.5" in front and 5x8 in back. Thanks for the advice fellas.

    Re: ETC Bose replacement question.....

Or you can just buy the BOSE speakers, I found them brand new (NOS) on Ebay for $48 each (amplifier and all).
And BTW the rear speakers are 6x9, and as many things in life bigger is better.
