1992 Seville Base Model 4.9 L Fuel Pump Humming

The fuel pump on my Son's Caddy seems to be humming quite a bit. It's noticeable when the window's down and at idle but less so when the vehicle is underway and windows up for the AC.

What's a fuel pump failure sound like before it becomes a reality and the car won't start?

Or, is a light humming normal?

It's humming because it doesn't know the words and the fat lady is about to sing. How long? But it should be quiet. I don't hear mine (unless I put my ear to the open filler pipe).

is a light humming normal -
YES - but what you are describing is more than "light humming"

What's a fuel pump failure sound like
    after your louder-than-normal humming -
    total silence -

you must drop the gas tank to replace the fuel pump -
so run it low to save additional work -

Are you certain it's the fuel pump and not the ELC pump?

Hmmm, not sure. Sound comes from the rear of the vehicle and is louder if I put my ear to the filler tube.

Is there a fuse for the compressor? Removing that would answer the question, huh?

I believe there is a compressor fuse, but the compressor should not run continuously. The fuel pump should.

Isn't the '92 compressor under the hood?

that would indicate that you are on the right track with the fuel pump. Just checking. Ranger debunked the elc as well. He's right, the pump is under the hood. I forgot!

I'll measure the fuel pressure and volume. I have a gauge which I use on my '92 Silverado which should work. It has a fitting that is used between the forward fuel line and the filter. Not a bad time to replace the filter too, I guess.

My manual shows the fuel filter to be nearer the rear of the car and near the frame longitudinal member on the drivers side (if I'm reading that correctly). Or, is there a Shrader valve under the hood for checking the fuel pressure?

Perhaps some of you are like me and I hope most Fathers, there are things we find deficient in our kids. You ask how long has the pump been humming (I like the joke, BTW). Neither I nor my Son know because he's away at school and studies and girls tend to cloud his mind to the point that he blocks out car noises that would tend to make most of us on this board startle.

Oh, well. His grades are good, anyway.
