Unhappy 98 Seville random no start issue

    Hey all,

I'm new here and new to Cadillac's, but always been a GM guy.
Just got my first Cadi, a 98 Seville STS, and I'm having a random issue with it not starting. Turn the key and get noting. No starter click or any thing.
Its happened three times in the week I've had the car. First time I left key in ignition after trying to start several times, scrolled through dash display to see battery voltage, which was 12.3v and it started right up. Second time I tried same thing and it didn't work, locked doors with remote entry and car started right up. This morning It happened again, tried the same as last two times, with no luck. waited about a min tried to start car again and it started right up. All three times it has been after the car has sat for a wile.

Any one have any idea what could be going on. It seems to be completely random and I cant figure out any thing in particular that lets the car start.

Thanks in advance for any help and I look forward to learning from you guys and being an active member of the community.

The key word is "random". Trying another key will take security system issues off the table.

Your words are describing a failing/failed starter solenoid.

Thanks for the reply JimD. Sadly I can not try another key as car only came with one and one keyless entry remote.
I may go to a dealer and see if they can make another for me and verify the key I have is not the valet key.

I'm kind of hesitant to think its the starter solenoid, because it doesn't drag or act odd in any way aside from when it wont start in which nothing happens at all other than dash lights going out.
I could be completely wrong though.

The key you are using is not the Valet key. The Valet key will not crank the engine ever; no random about that.

A failed or failing starter solenoid does not "'drag". The reason the starter motor does not spin the engine is because the copper disk contact inside the solenoid is pitted from switching that high current demand and the copper disk is having trouble spinning to a clean spot for a good connection. Hence random.

Take whatever steps will make you feel warm and fuzzy and do it quickly. That solenoid will totally fail at the most inconvenient time and you will be waiting for a wrecker to come to the rescue several hours later. Murphy's Law.

May be why its happening more frequently to me. Guy I got it from had it a month and a half and said it only did it once to him. Might as well go ahead and grab a solenoid from work on pay day and replace it. Thanks for your input JimD.

That could turn about to be a short term fix if you can even find a solenoid. Depends on how long you intend to keep the car as a daily driver.

If it was my car, I would replace the complete starter assembly.

I can get a solenoid no problem, we have one in stock at the AutoZone I work at. I do intend on keeping the car, but even with my discount I cant afford a new starter right now. Down the road if the solenoid fixes the problem I'll get a lifetime starter.
    Thanks for the advice JimD!

I have to correct myself here. The valet key will crank the engine!! Sorry for thinking about something else while I was constructing that post.

My head was locked in a dark tunnel. I was thinking about the master key while I was typing about the Valet key.

The master key will operate any lock on the car but because the master key does not have a transponder head, the master key will not crank the engine.
