DEXRON-VI is the new GM universal fluid as of 2006. It superseded the now-obsolete DEXRON-III.

Which if I'm not mistaken was the recommended trans fluid back in 1970 as well.

There's a Peak brand which says on the bottle "For Dexron III/Mercon applications" but says
    nothing about Dexron VI.
Still it sounds like what you're suggesting I need
    for this car.

You can still find the - superseded - DEXRON-III on store shelves, so if you don't care to go with the recommended (GM) latest and greatest, use the old stuff.

GM has a TSB on this.

The manual for the '70 Eldorado states the fluid
capacity at only 5 quarts. Does that sound a bit
    low? I wonder if it's a misprint.

Does not have to be Dexron VI, any fluid meeting Dexron spec III will do.
