2000 SLS not shifting from park

    Hello all,

I'm newer to the Caddy scene, with my main strengths being older Benzes. I got this 2000 SLS with 94K miles on it needing a tuneup so yesterday I did the spark plugs and ignition packs, and upon hooking her back up to power she would not shift from park (from the interior at least). I did manually put her into drive successfully from under the hood, even going to get a pizza down the street. Reverse works fine as well, transmission is fine, except I just can't shift from P on the inside. While doing the plugs I did unplug something here or there to make them more accessible (Damn was it a pain at times) and cannot guarantee I plugged everything back in the way it originally was, especially this blue and white 4 prong piece here that rests just above the rear ignition pack. The wire form this DOES seem to travel down into the abyss to what could be the tranny, but that's just an uneducated guess considering tha's really the onlt plug that gave me trouble. I've attached a picture of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

You may have unplugged the sensor that tells if your using the brake. Often you can turn the key just slightly before on or start and it will let u move the shifter put it in neutral and start car. This allows you to shift despite not applying the brake as far as the car knows. May want to make sure your brake lights come on just to be safe.

Re: 2000 SLS not shifting from park

Hey purelux thanks for the timely response. I believe I did try to override it that way by turning the key between positions to no avail. If it helps, I don't recall there being any click to release the shifter when I would depress the brake pedal and attempt to shift in the usual way. I'm not around the car for a little while so I can't try again, but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

Yes I've just checked and cannot shift with key fidgeting between positions . Are there any common switches etc that could fail and cause this problem. ?

There is a brake interlock switch that prevents shifting from park without having your foot on the brake. I believe it is in the console.

Can anyone direct me on how to access this switch? And if possible how to tell if it's bad/where to get a replacement? Tried shifting with key in between positions, no luck, and like mentioned before there is no click when stepping on pedal so something isn't allowing it to shift.

    Thanks again

this is from page 2-29 of the Owners Manual -
If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease the pressure
on the shift lever. Push the shift lever all the way into
PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then
move the shift lever into the gear you want. If you
ever hold the pedal down but still can’t shift out of
    PARK (P), try this:
Turn the ignition key to ACC. Open and close the
driver’s door to turn off the retained Accessory
    Power (RAP) feature

Apply and hold the brake until the end of Step 4.

     Shift to NEUTRAL (N).

Start the vehicle and then shift to the drive gear
    you want.

Have the vehicle fixed as soon as you can.

Pull the shift knob. Just yank stright up (hard) and it should pop off. Pry the wood grain panel from the rear and lift off. You should then be able to see the solenoid on the passengers side if I remember correctly.

And if possible how to tell if it's bad/where to get a replacement?
Not quite sure how to test it, but if it is working, I believe you should see it move when you step on the brake.

Isn't there an orange manual release button under the rubber pad in the little storage compartment just forward of the shifter?

Nothing has worked. Does anyone know if it having to be towed a few months ago by manually shifting under the hood because the parking brake couldn't be released do to not being able to start the car and put car into gear to release like normal (mid spark plug job) have anything to do with it? Worked fine before...

No, that wouldn't cause the problem.

Did you unhook the park lock cable from the shifter? That was my problem on a 99 STS that was next to impossible to move the shifter from park.
