    P 0300 code - 2001 Seville

Hi everyone , 2001 caddy Seville SLS , 4.6 NORTHSTAR , 115000 MILES. driving from a stop position , I suddenly get a "flashing" service engine soon. I pull over and have a "rotten egg / sulfer" type of smell coming from car. I pull code P0300 (engine misfire / mis fires). very rough idle now. checked injector fuses (ok) , and any disconnected vacuum hoses, couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. I guess it could be a number of things , but I am thinking of cat converter ???? now it has a steady "service engine soon", not flashing. Any help ????? Thank You , Tim

    Re: p0300 code

P0300 is a generic misfire code. Take it to Advance or AutoZone and have them scan it, they should be able to give you the code(s) for the cylinder(s) misfiring. The reason your smelling the rotten egg smell is because raw fuel was dumped into the exhaust system as it didn't get burned up in the cylinder due to the misfire(s). Once you get the code you can narrow down your search a bit more, could be spark plug(s) or one of the coil cassettes may have failed. If you keep driving it though you risk damaging the catalytic converter.

Curt is correct. The sulfur smell is from running rich. Check for a leaky FPR.

    Re: p0300 code

Pretty sure cylinder 8 is on the front bank to the far right if you're looking at the motor from the front of the car. Yes, FPR is fuel pressure regulator. If the injector is working it is more than likely a bad plug or coil cassette. I see you mentioned you're at 115k, 100k is the recommended mileage to change them so if you don't know the last time they were done I would just change them all.

They're interchangeable so you could test by swapping the two. If the miss follows you've found your culprit. If it is the coil I suggest used, new ones are way over priced.

    Re: P 0300 code - 2001 Seville

Could be a plug, plug wire, coil or ICM. How old are the plugs & wires?

It ended up being the coil pack. I replaced it with a new one from adv auto (20% off using code P20 or CC20). Thank You everyone for all the help.....I appreciate it very much !! Tim

What's a "coil pack"? You have 4 coils mounted on the ICM. Do you mean all 4 coils?

The first post says he's working on a 2001 Seville - but his login banner says 1998 Deville.

tinman, If you have changed cars, please update your profile. Thanks .......

Even on an '01 there is no such thing. I know I'm being picky, but I just hate these inaccurate terms.

Yeah ......... The GM service manual (some of them) refer to the assembly as a "cassette"; other manuals and sites refer to them as "ignition coil", "coil assembly" or any of another half dozen names.

I usually use the "cassette" for 2000 - 2003/4, "coil" for the 4-coils on the ICM (waste spark) pre-2000 setups, and "coil assembly" for the later 4 coils on one bar (the newer coil-on-plug setup).

    For instance .............
