    97 SLS grinding noise

Hi, my Mom's 97 SLS with 85k miles, just yesterday, started making grinding noises only when stopping at a red light for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Stopping at a stop sign or slowing down to make a turn, doesn't cause it. I pulled the codes and nothing showed up. Any thoughts?
Any help would be truly appreciated, since when I go to a mechanic, they call me "little lady" and charge extra. Thanks.

Serp belt tensioner. Or anything that belt touches. Alternator bearing, or perhaps waterpump tensioner.

    Re: 97 SLS grinding noise

Thank you, but what is a serp belt tensioner? Also, what would that belt touch? Would an altenator bearing and a waterpump tensioner make that noise?
Again, it helps to know when a "little lady" shows up to talk to a mechanic, that she knows some terminology. Thank you so much.

    Thanks

    started making grinding noises
only when stopping at a red light for 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

that isn't much to go on -
we need a LOT more information to be the least bit helpful -

    open the hood -

listen for - and locate the noise -

take a picture if possible -

point to the area/thing making the noise -

Does this grinding noise happen when braking or simply start at idle? Does the noise change at all if you apply a little throttle?

The "serp belt tensioner" is the spring loaded serpentine belt tensioner (#1).

Listen the left and the right side of the engine (there is a belt on either side).
Also listen to the area directly behind the radiator (the front of the engine compartment), could be one of the fans.

Is the grinding noise engine RPM dependent, is it always constant?
You mentioned the noise is only when stopped so I would assume is not speed dependent nor happens when brakes are applied (correct)?
Is it possible that you don't hear it when the car moves because of the tire/air noise and you hear it only when stationary?

You need to consider all these when describing the noise.
